I'd love to be the Time theatre critic. You see everything, write maybe two reviews a year, then publish a year-end list. Pretty sweet gig.

His list is mind-boggling, though.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

FOLLIES & UNCLE VANYA should have definitely made that Top 10 list.

He's the same critic who had The Little Mermaid and Grease on his Top 10 list. It's always ridiculous.

Did someone get paid for this?

If "yes," how much?

It's the same critic, I presume, who called WICKED "the best musical of the decade".

Scott Brown list in NY Magazine is better:

1. Sweet and Soul
2. Sleep No More
3. Book of Mormon
4. Follies
5. Jerusalem
6. Cymbeline
7. Sons of the Prophet
8. Arcadia
9. School for Lies
10. Other Desert Cities / Intelligent Homosexual's Guide
Honorable Mention: The Cherry Orchard

Smaxie, no doubt anybody who disagrees with your so-called superior opinions is "ridiculous". I would hate to see your list. I'm sure my list would much more closely resemble Time's list. At least their critic doesn't overanalyze, spend an inordinate amount of time summarizing the plot, or cast sarcastic and irrelevant barbs to prove his wit.

No, the Times critic doesn't over-analyze. He apparently closes his eyes and throws darts at a wall with the names of the plays pinned on it to make his choice.

If GREASE and MERMAID were on his Top 10 list, then yes, it's ridiculous. TIME Magazine Top Ten Stage 2011

Not only that, Grease ranked #1.

Oh homeimp, unless you ARE the list maker from TIME, (I won't call him a critic), how can you find that list defensible? He sticks caveats in on many of these shows he supposedly likes. There's nothing worse than critics who just won't own their opinions. It's just like Brantley, constantly saying something "may just be one of the best things in years..."! Really? Go out on a limb and make a statement free of escape hatches. That TIME guy blows.

I mean "Porgy and Bess?!"

He probably put Porgy and Bess on the list when Bess still called the women of Catfish Row "country bitches."

WAR HORSE in the number 1 spot is correct.
I'm surprised the NY list doesn't include it.

No Hugh Jackman? He's on MY list...

Hugh Jackman's probably not on the list since it was preserved for actual theatre, not a concert.
