James Clow and Melissa Errico will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical category respectively for their performances in Irving Berlin's White Christmas.
Does this mean that WHITE CHRISTMAS is eligible for Tonys? That doesn't make any sense. It was a new musical the previous season, which should make it ineligible. I thought that covered all the actors, too.

Sahr Ngaujah will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical category for his performance in Fela!
What about Kevin Mambo?
What happened to the 3 year wait for TONY eligibility for revivals?
They think that they should be able to be nominated. It's a new production, taking place a year later.
What's going on with Kevin Mambo...?
Is he not eligible at all?
Mambo is an alternate, so no, he's not eligible.
He performs three times a week and Sahr Ngaujah performs five times a week.

All revivals are new productions, that still doesn't let them escape the 3 year rule.
I thought Mambo got 4 performances, but either way he IS an alternate.
I thought the 3 year rule covered everything about the show too, but I guess we could be wrong. Has there ever been a situation like this before?
What's interesting to me is that the role of Beatrice in A View from the Bridge, which was a leading role in 1998 when Allison Janney played it (and was nominated for it), is now suddenly a featured role.
I love the Tonys and their lack of consistency.

I REALLY expected them to split Scarlett Johansson and Jessica Hecht. That is a mistake in my opinion. I doubt Johansson will be nominated now.
They should both be nominated, they are phenomenal. I agree though that it doesn't bode well for Johansson, it's such a crowded category. Then again so is the Best Lead Actress in a Play category I imagine. It's going to be a very interesting race.

This sort of thing has happened before.
Donna McKechnie won a Lead Actress in a Musical Tony for playing Cassie in the original production of A CHORUS LINE, yet Charlotte d'Amboise was nominated in the Featured Actress in a Musical category when she played the same role in the revival.
I'm well aware it's happened before. I'm just continuing to point out their lack of consistency when it comes to anything. But, thanks for the history lesson.
What about Catherine Zeta-Jones?
Zeta-Jones will be considered in the leading category as Desiree is the lead role in the musical. The producers did not need to petition her because her name is already above the title.

It's hardly "interesting" when the committee is consistently inconsistent.
But thanks for the unwarranted snarkiness.
Your faux insider posts are hardly interesting, either, hon.

somethingwicked: "Donna McKechnie won a Lead Actress in a Musical Tony for playing Cassie in the original production of A CHORUS LINE, yet Charlotte d'Amboise was nominated in the Featured Actress in a Musical category when she played the same role in the revival."
It was all politics.
As amazing as Ms. McKechnie is, Michael Bennett fought and pulled strings to get her into the Best Actress in a Musical category for the 1976 season. Because "A Chorus Line" is an ensemble piece, there were no credits above the title. According to the Tony rules, and the nature of a show like "A Chorus Line", a role like "Cassie" would be considered a featured part.
Like now, it was controversial then because the likes of Chita Rivera, and Gwen Verdon were in that same running.
Bennett also fought for the nominations of Robert LuPone, Sammy Williams, Kelly Bishop, and Priscilla Lopez. Two of which actually won awards as well.

From Playbill:
James Clow and Melissa Errico will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by a Leading Actor/Actress in a Musical category respectively for their performances in Irving Berlin's White Christmas, which is eligible as a Revival.

That makes no sense, unless they once again changed the rules, which wouldn't surprise me at all since they have been trying to make the Tony Awards more and more of a joke for a few years now.
I feel it will hurt Hecht, not Johanson, who I think is a shoe-in for a nom so far.
The whole Bennett CHORUS LINE thing I believe shows how tightly he was "in bed" with the Shuberts at the time.
The Lansbury thing would be controversial if it wasn't, well, Angela Lansbury, and I worship at her shrine but could her name be anymore more huge above the title?
There is a lot more to come but I am putting Norton as the first "sure" nom in that category.
I think the new WHITE CHRISTMAS cast members should be eligible but that's all.
How do you figre that Norton is a sure nom?
