Adamgreer, you know your Tony stuff. I enjoy reading you even when I disagree with you. For instance, I know you're on record as hating 'Memphis' and predicting that 'Everyday Rapture' will bump it out of contention for Best Musical.
That said, I don't think all of Melissa Rose Bernardo's predictions are 'idiot'-ic. Her Best Play choices seem reasonable: 'Enron,' 'Next Fall,' 'Red' and 'Time Stands Still.' Nor would she be the only one who thinks Chad Kimball could be a Best Actor contender. Frank Scheck of the Hollywood Reporter predicted when 'Memphis' opened back in October that Kimball would be remembered at awards time. And Robin de Jesus was Tony-nominated for 'In the Heights'; maybe he'll repeat here. As for 'no one remembering Jude Law,' the Drama League did, and gave him a nomination, so who knows?
Instead of knocking her predictions, how about posting yours?
Updated On: 4/25/10 at 01:24 AM
I won't be posting any predictions until after I've seen Collected Stories and Fences, both of which will happen this coming week.
I see Kimball being overlooked because he's in a highly competitive category, against the likes of Hodge, Sahr, Nathan Lane, John Gallagher Jr., Alexander Hanson, Sean Hayes, and Kelsey Grammer.
DeJesus was rightfully nominated for In the Heights- he added a lot to the production. He subtracts from this production with his over the top antics, re-setting the musical from the 1970's French Riviera to New York City, 2010.

adamgreer, I couldn't agree with you more about Robin De Jesus.
I thought he would be ideally cast as Jacob, but I was absolutely floored that Terry Johnson let him get away with the work he's turning in.
It's literally an exact retread of his performance from IN THE HEIGHTS, and it falls completely out of context with the rest of the production. It felt like he was trying to do a 2010 version of Googie Gomez in a production that's so period appropriate everywhere else.
What an unfortunate mess from someone who is so talented otherwise.
>DeJesus was almost universally panned in an otherwise praised production<
This is untrue. Here's what was said about his performance from the major critics:
Daily News
Also noteworthy: Robin De Jesus, who plays Albin's "maid" like a streetwise Latina. The choice doesn't quite match the period, but he serves up Fierstein's zingers with gusto.
Associated Press
The supporting cast offers delirious comic support - from Robin De Jesus as a Googie Gomez-inspired domestic who attends Albins' every whim to Fred Applegate and Veanne Cox as the girl's bewildered parents.
Hollywood Reporter
The musical's farcical elements are equally well realized, with particularly strong contributions from Lynne Page's amusing choreography, Matthew Wright's tackily over-the-top costumes and hilarious supporting performers like Robin De Jesus as the couple's sassy maid, Jacob.
TheaterMania
Under Johnson's sassy direction, the entire cast gives the show its all. Robin De Jesus stands out as fey maid Jacob.
Backstage
As Jacob, the flighty butler, Robin De Jesus seems to have washed up on the shores of the Riviera after swimming from the Bronx River. But his gritty Nu Yawk manner spices up the domestic scenes immeasurably.
Time Out New York
The remarkable Robin De Jesus as Jacob, Zaza's sassy male maid, inventively reimagined with sweet licks of Latino brass.
Entertainment Weekly
Robin de Jesus (In the Heights) is uproarious as Albin's devoted butler/maid who aspires to be Cagelle himself.
New York Post
The supporting cast -- particularly Robin De Jesus, equally deadpan and flaming as the butler/maid Jacob -- is top-notch.
Bloomberg News
the rest of the cast is so good. Tops among them are Robin de Jesus, as Albin's conniving, stage- struck assistant.
Wall Street Journal
Since everything about "La Cage" is on the nose, I'll be brief and mention only Robin de Jesus, the male maid of the Grammer-Hodge menage, who is madly funny and has the best legs in the show
USA Today
Robin De Jesus delivers the highest octane level as Georges and Albin's feisty "maid," Jacob, presented here with a hilarious (if not exactly appropriate) Nuyorican accent.
NY1 News
There's a variety of accents in this company and it was clear that the casting of Robin DeJesus as a Nuyorican-sounding Jacob, the butler/maid, was strictly for comic relief, and it worked.
Bergen Record
Robin De Jesus, who's thoroughly and winningly transformed himself from the little cousin in "In the Heights" into Jacob, the couple's snippy, cross-dressing maid, speaks with the intonations of a Latino New Yorker.
For the record, two critics had issues with his performance: Newsday and Variety. As you can see above, no "universal panning" took place.
I was just thinking that Smaxie. Thanks for posting all that and reminding me that I'm not crazy and the elcetro therapy really did work.
Just added a few more categories to my original picks. And made 2 slight changes to those pics.

Do we know what the Tony rulings is for Saur Ngaujah, Fela? Fela, is played by more than one actor. Do we have another Billy Elliot on our hands?
showinoff, the decision was that only Ngaujah would be eligible as he was Fela on opening night. I know this goes against what I said earlier in the thread (I'm fickle), but I'm beginning to wonder if he might be left out of the nominations, making it Grammer, Hodges, Hayes, Gallagher, and Lane. In a showy/celeb packed category, I don't think Hanson stands a chance and am curious if Ngaujah's five show/week schedule will hurt him. Thoughts?
When are we going to find out American Idiot's score eligibility?

I predict Angie L will NOT win a TONY for ALNM. Yes seriously. Various reasons, but main ones are... 1. show got panned and critics don't like when ticket buyers ignore them (yes I know
her and Cathy got good reviews), 2. She had her big emotional come back win last year 3. There are several more political choices this year which would be more dramatic.
A Little Night Music was not panned- its average grade on Stage Grade was a solid B. Hardly panned.if you want to see panned reviews, take a look at the reviews for The Addams Family.
Theatrefan4 is also 100 percent correct- critics have no voting privileges this season.
To whomever said featured actor in a musical is the strongest category, I disagree. Leading actor in a play and musical are both much more competitive. Featured actor in both play and musical is among the weakest of the year.
Featured actor in both play and musical is among the weakest of the year.
And that's why it's a wide open category, not necessarily a strong one.

I really would not be suspired if Gallagher gets a nomination at the expense of Grammer.
While both did get good reviews - Grammer seems to have fallen in the shadow of Hodge, while Gallagher was the stand-out of AI.
Also, there has not been much discussion about Best Director of a Play. I am hoping that Tucci makes the final cut and takes the trophy home. His work on Lend Me A Tenor was quite good.
Also, if Memphis indeed gets a Best Musical nomination I don't think it would be far-fetched to predict that Christopher Ashley could take one of the Best Director spots. My guess is that the Best Director for a Musical nominees are:
Michael Mayer, American Idiot
Bill T. Jones, Fela!
Terry Johnson, La Cage
Christopher Ashley, Memphis
