Why did everyone say Jennifer Hudson will win a TONY?
an Oscar does not give you a tony
Nicole Kidman did not get one nor was she nominated
Susan Sarandon did not get one nor was she nominated
Juila Roberts did not and nor was she nominated
so why did people think she would be nominated?
being famous does not either Daniel Radcliffe has been on Broadway 3 times and no tony noms.

She's not an actress. She's a singer who can sometimes act. Jennifer Hudson can only act when she's in song. When she's not singing, it's honestly a snooze fest. Love her but that's a bit of a stretch.

They've had one performance, and not everyone even liked it, so... not sure where "everyone" is saying this, nor why you couldn't ask this in the Color Purple thread?!

Truth. I don't think she'll win but she didn't even deserve the GO of the EGOT to be honest. She's gotten marginally better (Smash, Empire) but calling her an actress still feels like a stretch.

The G in EGOT stands for Grammy, so not sure what that win has to do with her acting ability.

Hey, if you're not here to bash Jennifer Hudson, maybe this isn't the thread for you?!

Well her Grammy was for her album, "Jennifer Hudson" which won for Best R&B album. Regardless of whether I liked it or not (which I didnt, even as big of a fan of R&B that I am), I agree it doesn't really go with the acting part. I am happy for her success; I just think she's terribly overrated.

Of the people who saw it last night. There are far more people who enjoyed it than did not. And I don't think anyone said they flat out DIDNT like it. There were moments. But all in all I felt for a first preview it's in really great shape. And it defines a revival on all points.

I'm curious to know if she's actually singing The Color Purple score or just riffing it. If that preview video is any indication I'm not amused.

This is a John Doyle production. I can't imagine he'd allow any more riffing than the original production. He knows how to rein in even the biggest of stars.

What a bitter and nasty vibe to this thread. I hope she is wonderful in it. Why not?

If you guys want to hear Jennifer Hudson sing and not just riff, go and watch the TimesTalks she did with Cynthia, Alice Walker, and John Doyle.

I like JHud and I thought she was phenomenonal in Dreamgirls. But I didn't think the character of Shug is Tony worthy at all (much less a win). Granted I just watched the first national tour with Michelle Williams and not the original Broadway production. While I thought Michelle was great, I didn't think it was that much difficult to play the role. It wasn't that demanding. I don't even think it won a Tony for featured (I don't remember but forgive me if I'm wrong). I love the song "What About Love" though.... But come Tony next year, so far it's hard to beat Renee Elise Goldsberry.

^Please keep in mind that Margaret Avery was Oscar Nominated for playing Shrug Avery in the Steven Spielberg film, and Elisabeth Withers-Mendes was Tony Nominated for the role in the original production.
It's also pretty interesting that Renee Elise Goldsberry is so far the one to beat, because she originated the role of Nettie in the original production.
