If the production is good and gets great reviews, tickets will be at a premium and there won't be much in the way of discounts. It's a possibility the show may be filmed/taped but deals for PBS and/or cable Tv showings would have to help underwrite some of the costs.
I am curious abpout the comment:
Someone had to be willing to put up thousands of dollars with a full understanding that they will never get back a single penny of their investment. While I don't think any of the commercially released tapings have reaped huge profits, the basic costs would eventually be recovered through licensing (overseas and here) and video sales.
I think it's a little unfair to compare paying for this as throwing one's money down the sewer.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
