Yeah. The show actually just advertised the cast recording on Comedy Central during South Park as a soundtrack. I don't like that.

So they can't advertise on their show, for their other show they wrote? On an ad that they are paying for? For a show to get people interested in a broadway musical? Jesus, get a life you losers. Ijay889, we GET it. You don't like the BOM. WE GET IT. But if a broadway show is getting a group of people into musicals that would normally not get into musicals, its gross. You guys really really need to get a life.

What part of this is bad? I don't get it.
They are making a big deal because they used the term soundtrack, and not cast recording.

STFU, newbie. I meant 'ew' to them calling it a soundtrack.

OH NO!! They said soundtrack!!
Again, get over it. Its turning people on to broadway. Even if you don't like the show, its getting more people to come to NY to see theater than any other show out right now. This is a good thing for all shows...Oldbie

The last show to commit such an abomination, that I remember, was LEGALLY BLONDE.

I hate the word "soundtrack".
Let's boycott the show until they correct their egregious error.

read my before message and you will see. "I'm gonna have to ask people to pay attention"

Soundtrack is the incorrect term in this case. It just is. And it's annoying to people who hear it misused over and over because it's really not that complicated of a concept.

Obviously not the grammar fairy
To be fair, a cast recording in itself is not a "soundtrack" per se, but it is a subgenre in the Soundtracks genre of MARKETING. This is where I assume much of the confusion among bloggers and advertisers alike comes from- where do you buy cast recordings and soundtracks? In the part of the music store marketed as soundtracks.

I love this thread. And it's a cast recording. It's not that hard to figure out what it means.
^
Some stores do it right and have soundtracks and cast recordings cataloged appropriately.
Very true, Cats, they're usually next to each other but separate
Was it like a stand-alone TV spot? If so...A) weird that they have them for the cast recording and B) weird, since it's referred to as a cast recording on their site.
I'd guess it's an intentional "error" to appeal to and catch the attention of people who know South Park but not Broadway. Speaking their language... still annoying.
Miriam Webster Dictionary has the definition of Soundtrack as: The musical accompaniment to a movie. Thats pretty big difference from a cast recording. It doesn't annoy me as much as it does others but they should be professional enough just to know the difference.

-Yes, it was a TV spot JUST for the cast recording that featured about 15 seconds of "Hello." It basically said that the "soundtrack" is now available, and you could check out their website for free bits of it.

-That's what I would think. In some ways, it's clever, but incredibly irritating to me. It's literally one of my biggest (and most pathetic) pet peeves when someone calls a cast recording a soundtrack.
In fact, I remember- my first post on here was asking which Sweeney soundtrack to get. Some people were incredibly snarky, and others kindly corrected me. I've been incredibly aware of it ever since!
"Again, get over it. Its turning people on to broadway."
That's right, and teaching them the wrong terms. If you don't teach something the correct way, it will become obsolete.

That's just pathetic.

But people have been erreously calling cast recordings soundtracks for as long as I can remember, and it hasn't stopped them from existing or being called by their proper names by people know it. Or are you saying that if they are continued to be called soundtracks they will eventually stop being made?
I sincerely doubt this was some sort of canny, "deliberate" mistake. Even people in the know often make the mistake. I've seen interviews with Broadway performers who have referred to cast recordings as soundtracks. To some people (most, I'd venture to guess) it's just not a big deal. Because it isn't.
I call them cast recordings, but I don't lose my sh*t when someone else calls it a soundtrack. It just doesn't matter to me.
Why wasn't that caught? Strange that no one noticed. But I doubt most of the people who saw that commercial will ever want to talk about cast recordings anyway. No harm done. (Because being subjected to mistakes like this is horribly painful)
