The Judge's "Johanna" and the Sweeney Film..

People on the IMDB keep on debating if the Judge's JOHANNA will be in the Sweeney film or not.

I was wondering what you guys think? Some people are saying it would get an NC 17 rating if it was in there. But I don't believe that all. Some say the scene will be way too disgusting to be in the film. But I really don't think so.

This IS Burton and I can certainly see it working on film.

What do you guys think?

I don't know, I can see it either way.

That said, who's to say that it'd be done the same way in the film? Sure, the music does somewhat dictate the whole climax thing, but Burton could theoretically take it another direction.

NC 17 for a man hitting himself with a whip, and singing about wanting a young girl? At its worst, it's just really creepy.

Unless Burton is going to make Turpin flagellate with a Cat O' Nine Tails Whip with ultra sharp mini razors attached, I don't see how that could be unbearable to watch for anyone under 17.

Unless Rickman is naked, and is simultaneously masterbating, visibly, whilst whipping himself.

That'd be really intense.

Personally, I think I have too much bloom.

While we're on the subject. Do you think it would be too much to hope for that the KISS ME Quartet would be included? I think they would include the duet. But I am thinking the quartet would be a bit much to ask for. Though I'd love the quartet included. It's brilliant.

I think if it would suit the style of the film, it should be done similar to how it was originally staged (the Judge whipping himself). However, if it won't, I don't think they should include it. I don't think it will work well.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

There is [off-camera] masturbation in "Little Children." I'd imagine the circumstances of that scene being equal to or more than the Judge's "Johanna" scene.

oh I love the Quartet.
I don't know about how it would be done in the film, it seems a lot to be going on, and i think they would have to be switching scenes a lot, because Johanna and Anthony, and the Judge and whoever he is with, i forget at the moment, are in different places right?

As for the Judge's Johanna, unless he is naked like LostLeander said, unless he's naked, I don't see why it would need an NC17 rating.

The people on IMDb are idiots. That's not going to get an NC-17. Do these people know how FEW movies get NC-17 ratings?

This may sound pretty twisted, do forgive me. But I wouldn't mind seeing the song filmed with the Judge simulating with his hands what he's doing down below - but without showing anything below the waste. I still don't think that would call for an NC 17. I think if they just show him shirtless whipping himself (like they do on stage)it wouldn't be as realistic on film.

But as Timote said - maybe Burton doesn't see it as the Judge masturbating.

Annnnnnywayyyy... Kiss Me/Ladies in their Sensitivies is the most glorious quartet in the musical theatre cannon. Let's hope it makes the cut. I doubt, it though.

For some reason I highly doubt that the Quartet or the Duet will make it into this film. Just a gut feeling.

I wonder though if film audiences would buy the lack of masturbation, if you know what I mean.

I see him as uncircumcised, but what would be historically acurate?

Have these people even seen an NC-17 rated movie? Even the most suggestive/graphic performance of Johanna I've seen isn't remotely comparable to the lengthy, graphic sex scenes in the very few movies actually given that rating.

Rayyyyyy. You're making me nervous lol. I see them including the duet. Because this Johanna is suppose to have a glorious voice and if they cut GREEN FINCH she will have barely anything to sing as it is. But the quartet looks really iffy. Though I agree with Lendor, it's the ultimate musical theatre quartet.

Heh, considering some of the fangirly response to the revival, I'm sure that somewhere on the Internet (probably fanfiction.net), that already exists.

Do we know what songs *are* confirmed for the film so far? (I know Rickman mentioned in an interview that he would be singing with Depp, so I guess that means "Pretty Women" made the cut, but has anything else been mentioned?)

They'd have to go so incredibly overboard to get an NC-17 rating. All I know is that I hope the number makes the movie, purely to see Alan Rickman perform it.

I have a VERY STRONG suspicion that a lot of songs not in the theatrical relaese WILL be in the DVD/ CD. I might have an opportunity next week to ask someone who is a close friend of Rickman's but will have to see what the crush is like. Will advise if I do.

That'd be good, sort of like Frollo in 'Hunchback'. The lyrics imply what he's doing anyway so it doesn't necessarily have to be shown. I do however hope they keep the song in.

As for 'Kiss Me' and the 'Quartet', I don't know if they'd been kept in - I heard that Johanna doesn't sing ? But then again it could just be a rumour.

I'm going out on a limb, and I don't know much about it (!!!!) but he can bring himself to climax with only the pain and the thoughts, not needing to actually masturbate? I always thought that was what happened anyway, and its a fairly powerful image, without having to spell it out.

I've seen the DVD of the original Broadway production and I can't remeber this song actually being in it. I'm pretty sure it's not there...
Anyway, I didn't miss it after seing a production with it lol.

The song was in the original production, but it was cut in previews.

And that DVD is of the tour, not the Broadway production.
