re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

slightly surprised at Derek Jacobi winning..not that he wasn't great in Twelfth Night..but i didn't think it was an award winning performance by any means. Well done though!

Yes please - all I've got is a cup o' Yorkshire tea at the moment.

Not surprised that Margaret Tyzack got best actress for The Chalk Garden but a bit disappointed for Deanna/August.

I'm surprised too - didn't it get good-but-not-great reviews?

This all seems to be happening very fast. They given out some serious awards and it's not 8:00pm yet.

Thankfully they are mostly honouring British theatre, not American imports. Hopefully this continues :)

I'm a bit confused. They've done Best Actor and Actress in a Play, and best supporting actor in a play...then supporting actress in a musical. Wouldn't it have made more sense to do best supporting actress in a play instead? do all the musical ones together in the second half...?

I suspect The Chalk Garden (which I haven't seen) was always going to clean up but I hoped August (which I have seen) would get best actress.

Sam, there are only two supporting awards: Best Performance in a Supporting Role of a Musical and Best Performance in a Supporting Role of a Musical. No male and female distinction in those categories. Kinda stupid if you ask me

They just have one award now for both sexes, they used to have one each for both sexes.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Just read that Jodie presented an award ... so she's well enough to present at the Oliviers but not to perform a role she's paid to do?

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

Apparently not 'til 8:30.

They seem to change categories every year. I think it's different to the Tonys because there isn't such a thro' put of musicals in the West End. But yes the inconsistence irritates me as well.

Oz this was my thought exactly..she has to have a week off due to illnedd but can get dressed up and present at a glitzy awards bash..hmm!

Why? I mean, is it because none of the American imports are worthy of awards or is it because they're American?

I did ask Jodie about that - she says she's better now having had a few days off to rest her voice. There'll be audio snippets up on the Guardian site tomorrow morning.

re: The Laurence Olivier Awards 2009

This may sound bitchy, but did she say if these days to rest her voice are going to become more frequent (ala McCutcheon at the Lane)?
