Devoted, of course. I was there!!! He was fabulous. I'll tell you the whoooole story later... send me a PM. I think you'd enjoy it. We met him afterwards and gave him our condolences on the Tony... I think I was more upset than Raul was too! But I was glad that he didn't seemed too bummed out.
i don't want to sound strange, but.. i'm not sure what a PM is =/ but i would looooooooooooooove to hear any and all raul stories y'all are willing to share!!

Ohh i'd definitely call that devoted... yes I hope you enjoy LuvtheEmcee's story of our wonderful day, she looves telling it and is much better at the long posting thing than I am...I think she learned at some school....lol ...where was that again?
Oh and I think we should most definitely propose that idea to him...I'm sure he'll be all for it! Oh and you drove by the concert at a great time..."Simple Joys" was a fabulous performance...I've watched it more times than I can count now!

Well I don't know where you heard it, but I hear they're calling it The Emcee School of Really Long Posts. And hey, on this thread, that actually makes sense!
Cara- the show was phenomenal, yet again. Lisa Kron was very good as Dr. Brookner, she wasn't quite sure of her lines in the first scene, but she handled it really well. As for Raúl, He is just so great. This was the third time I saw the show, and his performance always gets me. I went to the matinee and gave him flowers, then waited outside the theatre and met Lisa Kron, Mark Dobies, Billy Warlock, Richard Bekins, McCaleb Burnett and Fred Berman. Everyone was very nice and the show was great! Hopefully I'm going to see it again as a graduation gift!
Thanks to this thread, I've just booked a trip to NYC in mid-July to catch this show. I will see a few other things that week, but Normal Heart is a MUST see.
I've read the play before, but have yet to see it on stage. Sounds like I will be catching a real treat.
hahaha, well said Ruffian. Well said. I just can't let this thread die... sorry!
Wicked_Elphie and I decided that after we see the play again, we're going to re-post "The Normal Heart and Other Such Things" in the name of the Esparza Heads! Yay for the new club!!! lol guys... too funny.
I have a dilemma, fellow Esparza Heads. I am embarrased to admit that I haven't seen Raul in Normal Heart. Don't be mad! It's just that.... well.... I saw the Normal Heart 20 years ago-i was still in diapers :) -- ok, first year of college! Anyway, it was fab. But i've since lost LOTS of friends to AIDS and seen LOTS of AIDS shows/films/performance pieces. I don't know that I can see one more-even with Raul. HELP fellow Esparza Heads.
I can't speak from that point of view... I'm actually way younger than you guys (but please don't be upset with me for that!) From simply a theatrical viewpoint, go. He's simply astonishing. But honestly, coming from where you are, if you don't feel comfortable, then don't do that to yourself.
On a side note, what's this I see about Raul doing that new musical, Brooklyn?
I would recommend going to see Normal Heart. It is a heartbreakingly excellent show (especially Raul's performance). I am going for the third time this Sunday evening. Haven't seen it yet without Joanna Gleason.
Billy Warlock is quite good. What an introduction for him into New York theatre. He has been very friendly after the show. Everyone has been nice about signing playbills, including the playwright, Larry Kramer.
I heard about Raul being in the forthcoming Brooklyn, but not sure it was true.
Well let's find out!! Now how do we go about doing that...? I guess Someone could ask Raul... I really want to meet him again after I see the play for the second time, but we're probably going to go to a Sunday matinee, and aren't sure we'll be able to, since there's a night show. I mean, the man doesn't live in theater, but still, often they don't come out. Anyone know if he does?
I'm really anxious now... I need to see him in a musical. I saw Taboo, but it was the day before they went to the studio to record the CD, and Raul had been sick so he was saving his voice.
Emcee, I'm sorry you didn't get to see Raul in Taboo. That Sunday was my first time seeing the show.
I saw Raul in Rocky Horror so I was disappointed to miss him. I loved Taboo so the only solution was to go back and see it again with him in it. Went Wednesday and loved it again. Then went Friday and loved it again. I knew the last performance on Sunday evening was sold out but I decided to go look longingly at the theatre.
I couldn't help finding myself at the box office praying for a cancellation. They said "fat chance" of course. The Cosmos knew however that the last few years had been pretty difficult ones ..... and decided to smile upon me.
The guy behind me was picking up five tickets and he only needed four. So guess who won out! I was overjoyed to say the least. And he didn't seem to mind the ((((( BIG HUG ))))) I gave him. My ticket "just happened" to be for the same seat I had Wednesday evening. I knew then that Taboo and Raul were destined to impact my life.
That's how my adventure with Raul has continued into the Normal Heart. I saw it during previews and once in May. Got a little carried away (maybe)???? and have a ticket for June, July and August as well.
Raul is consistently electric at every performance. He is soooooooooo edgy. Can you tell I like him just a bit .....
Seeing Taboo again would have been a solution, but I don't live in the city. Given that I only had one week left, it didn't work out so well. I loved the show though. I'm playng the CD right now!
I'm listening too. Petrified being my favorite of course. Usually Strangers is my second favorite. I also like Bow Down Mister from the London DVD a bunch.
I went to see Euan Morton at Joe's Pub at the Public Theatre, the Memorial Day weekend Sunday evening. I just knew after Raul's performance in Normal Heart he would make an appearance. I was delighted when he hopped up on stage for the finale. The crowd seemed pretty happy as well.
I heard about Euan's show while I was at the Public Theatre for The Normal Heart, but that was way after the tickets had sold out. I really wanted to go... and after I heard that Raul had gotten on stage to sing I was most definitely kicking myself. What did he sing anyway?
The show ended with everyone (including Raul) singing "Sing" by the Carpenters. He didn't do a song on his own. It was a great show and I was seated just a bit behind Boy George. Fun evening!
