Grey Gardens, the unique musical inspired by the film documentary about two eccentric relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, will end its Broadway run July 29 at the Walter Kerr Theatre.
Following the matinee, it will have played 307 performances and 33 previews.
The producers have expressed hope for a national tour and London production of the Doug Wright-Michael Korie-Scott Frankel musical, but no details about these productions have been announced.
Michael Greif (Rent) directed the three-time Tony Award-winning musical about real-life mother and daughter society women Edith and Edie Beale, Jackie O's aunt and cousin. The musical was a highly fictionalized account of their experience.
Raves and awards were showered on Christine Ebersole for playing 50ish Edith Bouvier Beale in Act One, and her middle-aged daughter, Edie, in Act Two. She took home the 2007 Tony Award as Best Actress in a Musical. Mary Louise Wilson was named Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her Act Two turn as the haggard, witchy but lovable Edith.
It's expected that Ebersole's work in the musical will be talked about for years to come — partly because she mimics so brilliantly what was captured in the 1975 film documentary that inspired the show. "Eccentric" doesn't begin to describe broken, nonconformist Little Edie in Act Two. (For costuming her, and others, designer William Ivey Long won the show's other 2007 Tony Award).-from playbill.com

I'm in Croatia right now, and have to get off the computer pretty quick, but I just wanted to post a quick "goodbye" to GREY GARDENS. I've said this many times, but this is the best show I've seen on Broadway (out of 42 I've seen), and I'm really going to miss it! I was fortunate enough to see it 3 times, and only wish I could've seen it more! The cast was astounding (kudos especially to Erin Davie- love her), and I hope to see them all onstage very soon. This was such a gorgeous show- such awesome sets, beautiful costumes, really diverse songs, and an intriguing story, and you really don't get many shows like this on Broadway. If only it could've lasted longer- I'm really going to miss walking into the Walter Kerr and hearing all those birds chirping
Best of luck to the cast and crew! And I can't wait to hear reviews from this afternoon.

Posted: 7/29/07 at 8:29amOne of the best shows I have had the pleasure to witness four times. One of the hardest working casts out there right now. Such a shame to see this piece of art go. We can only hope that it will live on in future productions. I wish the best of luck to the whole cast. I only wish I could be there today. Thank you Grey Gardens, for an amazing and emotional run!

Posted: 7/29/07 at 10:34amI was a big fan of the documentary for years and the first time I saw Grey Gardens I actually cried when Christine came out as Little Edie for Revolutionary Costume. Christine is a genius and I'll miss her and Mary Louise Wilson and the rest of the cast. It's sad that it's closing but I couldn't be more thankful that the powers that be created GG and brought it to Broadway, and that I was here to see it.

I'm very disheartened today to think that this show has come and gone so quickly on the Great White Way.
But I'm happy that many of you have had the opportunity to appreciate it, as I have.
Here's to Grey Gardens!
Here's to the Edies!
Long may they "wave" in our hearts and minds.

It's a shame this amazing piece of theatre has to close after such a short run. Grey Gardens has become one of my favorite show in recent years, and I'm going to miss it so much. It hit me so hard when I saw it, and was the only show to make me cry in the theatre.
Best of luck to the cast, crew, and creative team.
And, as best12 said, here's to the Edies!

Thanks to the gay mafia at the Tony committee and the major papers, this splendid show lost the major Tony Awards to some other show that features hotties and loud music. It seems that new shows for adults by adults has little place on Broadway. Unless of course Matt Cavenaugh performed shirtless.
GG is the new "Follies," a show underappreciated in its Bway debut that will grow in stature over the years and will be revived to acclaim.
Props to the cast and the best of luck for future productions. It's a shame that in-fighting has caused this show to shutter. I am sure they could have replaced the leads with equally interesting performers like Cloris Leachman and Catherine O'Hara.

Posted: 7/29/07 at 11:25amI'm so sad that I never got the chance to see this show on Broadway. I fell in love with it the first time I heard the music and I don't think it deserves to close at all. May Grey Gardens forever live on in future productions and our hearts.

I will never forget the inimitable feeling and the intense chills that this show always leaves me with. I am incredibly thankful that I'm going to be there today, but I'm sure it won't take long for me to hop on the crying-hot-mess-wagon. Anyone in the last row of the orchestra, have no fear, I've got the tissues covered.

Posted: 7/29/07 at 11:36amMy favorite musical of at least the last decade. I will miss this fascinating show terribly. It moved me in a way that mere words cannot express. I will be at today's closing performance cheering on this exquisite cast. Updated On: 7/30/07 at 11:36 AM

Posted: 7/29/07 at 11:49amI have not been lucky enough to see the show. But I do own the cast recording. I saw Spring Awakening at the Atlantic and was blown away by it. However, from just listening to the music from Grey Gardens and seeing the clips I have seen, I just think it may have been the better show. Just from the musuc it, FEELS like what a Broadway show should be. Not to knock any other show, but I guess it is what I prefer. JMO

Edie is flying away. That is so sad.
Congratulations on a show that will be remembered for a very long time.
I do wish the Playbill article had not used the word "mimic" regarding Ebersole's performance. It was so much more than that. So VERY much more.
