I believe they wanted the curse to get progressively worse as the midnights wore on.
I thought it seemed like Murphy was also progressively hunched over more and more as the midnights went on. This all makes much more sense.
But it also makes me wonder about her curse. Is there something that triggered the initial progression from night one to three? Or has she just been getting progressively uglier/more hunched for years? Maybe it's just because the kid is playing with her outside and she's getting dirty. Hmm.
