I'm surprised that no one posted this when it was announced, but Jack O'Brien will be directing a new national tour of 'The Sound of Music'. It begins Fall 2015 in Los Angeles. I would love for Ashley Brown and Steve Blanchard to play Maria and the Captain. I also think Marc Kudisch or Paul Schoeffler are perfect choices for Max. It would also be wonderful if Rachel York reprised the role of Elsa Schrader from the Hollywood Bowl production. Judy Kaye or Victoria Clark would also be excellent as Mother Abbess.

"THE SOUND OF MUSIC has been in our ears for decades, as it deserves to be: but it might be time to look once more, and more closely, at this remarkable work which, I feel, begins to reveal itself as deeper, richer, and more powerful than ever before. It's no longer 'your mother's familiar' SOUND OF MUSIC we're trotting out."
What a load of crap.

"What a load of crap."
You said it. Plus, this show is done by every high school, church, senior citizen group and community theater. Unless a director has a new take on the show, or an interesting star, why would a producer tour this? There are so many other great shows to tour.
Actually, I think it would be fun if they toured a live Sing Along Sound of Music.
It would be fun if the nuns started: "She climbs a tree and scraps her knee...Everybody sing..."
I seriously doubt that there'll be more than 1 familiar name on this tour (if that).
Surprised that they haven't come up with anything yet to fill the spot for Christmas this year

With the popularity of Sound Of Music Live it makes sense that there is a demand in the property around the country. With that I believe this tour will feature fresh talent, I do not believe anyone high profile will head out with the show.

Yay! How exciting! If it comes to my city, i'll go see it! I would love to see this new vision. Honestly, many of the same shows tour and are performed many times a year. Nothing wrong with that. I, personally, don't think it's a load of crap, but we're all entitled to our opinions.
I will say the same thing to this as I did to the live broadcast: why bother when we have such a great movie? The show works better on stage and unless you get to see Mary Martin in the role, there is no reason to see anybody other than Julie Andrews in that role.
I actually imagine they would get a relatively well known theatrical cast for this. Jack O'Brian seems to be respected in the community and I imagine many people would be excited to work with him.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Sierra Boggess do it. I don't know how much she actually has planned career-wise, plus O'Brien likes casting actors he's worked with and Sierra fits the bill (Love Never Dies, Guys and Dolls).

I also think the tour might be happening next year due to the movie celebrating its 50th Anniversary. It's great promotion. I wonder if they will get an alternate Maria did with the 2006 West End and Toronto revivals.

I know. It is timeless and cannot be replaced. We'll see what this tour will be like.

You are correct. They will be celebrating the 50th anneversary of the film. I really think it's to early to talk about casting. If anything will probably hear news of a Maria next spring, but there is still a long process to begin with.

It's produced with NETworks. Surely, surely this will be a union tour, but doesn't NETworks usually do non-union tours (Mary Poppins and the 25th anniversary Les Mis excepting)?

They've done both. Their last union production of RNHs Cinderella was pretty banging, and I imagine this will be a similar partnership.
The Sound of Music is one of those shows that will always draw a crowed. It's family friendly, well known, and enjoyed by almost all. Heck, I'd even go to see it! I'm assuming the show will be filled with mostly fresh talent, perhaps a bigger name for the role of Mother Abbess? I'd love to see Sierra as Maria.
Looking forward to the progress of this tour.

With the way casting is going now days, wouldn't doubt if we see Mylie Cyrus as Maria and Kim Kardasian as Baroness Schraeder. Bill Murray as the Captain would be a winner too.
It's a tour. And not a first national, so I would imagine we'd get more of a Rachel York than a "name" type person.

I have a feeling Sierra will star in the upcoming Ever After, and if the out-of-town tryout is successful, which will pave way for Broadway, then she may not go on tour with TSOM.
Moreover, just because a successful movie was made out of SOM doesn't mean it will pale in comparison on stage. We still have revivals of Oliver!, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, and so on even after their successful film adaptations. I think TSOM on tour will sell well. There's just a thrill of seeing something live on stage even if there is a great movie of the show already. The recent revivals in London and Toronto were very successful, and so was Sound of Music Live. Now, ITV in England wants to make a British version of SOML for 2015.

My guess is that if anyone would be a recognizable name, it would be Captain Von Trapp, not Maria. It will probably be some B/C-level film or TV star as the Captain and a talented unknown (or someone who's not a huge name) as Maria. Kind of like the recent Chicago production with Billy Zane and Jenn Gambatese.
it'll be a union tour based on the fact they plan to do multi-week stops in some cities. It's very rare for a non-equity tour to play several weeks in one city/stop.

I would say Jack O'Brien being attached to direct is the bigger indicator of its union status than its itinerary. With all of the touring/union issues that are out there right now I can't imagine Mr. O'Brien would be willing to risk his reputation and standing with the general membership by agreeing to direct a non-Equity tour.

Jack O'Brien is arguably the best musical theatre director on Broadway (not the West End, his work sucked on "Love Never Dies" but I'm guessing his hands were tied). I wonder if he is going to go back to the source with this production, altering the Lindsay and Crouse book to make it a little less Splenda, upping the horrors of the Nazi occupation.
Anyway, I hardly think this tour is just a tour, I'm sure it has its eyes set on Broadway if reaction merits.
