"t was revealed that he DID lipsync to another singer's voice.... that's why he didn't do the HSM Live! Concert. He couldn't sing the music -- his range isn't high enough."

For HSM?! How pathetic is that?

I can't believe a mug shot was never leaked. re: This is one stunt-casting move I'm happy isn't on Broadway... good luck

I still think of that TMZ video where the lady says something like, "Tracy Turnblad. She ain't singin' and dancin' around today."

I thought he sounded fine in Hairspray.

I still think stunt casting is more about an existing show. If the person is the reason the show is even coming to fruition, I don't see why that's stunt casting.

He's NOT the "reason"

This revival has been scheduled for a long time... they were gonna have a huge BBC Reality Show to find the lead role. I'm guessing that never developed?

I'm a dumb ass. I didn't realize it was already running. It is kinda stunt castingy. I still don't think it's that bad, though.

Bob Fosse tried to overlook this small detail by having Sally sing/perform all her songs in the empty Kit Kat Klub (implying that only in her head is she the great singer she thinks she is), but unfortunately... this detail was overlooked by everyone.

So are the audience members supposed to be in Sally’s head? They’re clearly visible in Minnelli’s musical numbers (or am I just misreading your statement?).

Sorry to the OP for the threadjack; just curious about that comment.

And even then the club is not completely empty (there are a couple of disinterested patrons, and sparse applause at the end of the song).

Yeah, i didn't understand that point in Brody's post either. But, that was a great explanation of the history of casting Sally Bowles (go Jill Haworth!).

That was a joke, right? They already did that. Lee Mead won. Now he's leaving.

OK...I'm not sure how I know this but...

They wanted him to lip sync the first HSM because his voice was too deep and they wanted him to sound younger....more innocent. He sang HSM 2 & 3 because he got older - they are going to PROM!! YEAH!! LOL The best part of prom is getting ready. Prom actually kinda sucks.

Didn't the cast of the Hairspray movie sing a few songs live on some morning show around when the movie came out? I believe he sang part of "Ladies Choice" live and he sounded fine.

Interesting that he's doing theater when he could be making so much more doing movies (after all he IS one of the hottest actors, marketing-wise). It seems like with young actors, you have to keep working constantly to stay in the limelight or you are forgotten and pushed to the Z-list... Could this be a potentially bad career choice?

First up: Efron's singing was replaced by Drew Seeley in the FIRST and first ONLY 'High School Musical', because the songs were just that bit too high. "Coincidentally", Drew Seeley was one of the song-writing team for the movie.

Second: this is what is commonly known as a RUMOUR. Which originated in the Mirror, which is... oh, probably the second most unreliable tabloid in the UK; a little more reliable than the Daily Star, a little less reliable than the Sun.

Third: a new rumour has emerged that actually, Gethin Jones is going to be the new Joseph. Which is... actually bordering on the believable side.

While I would dearly love Efron to take the role and prove all the naysayers wrong (nothing makes me laugh more than theatre snobs getting all uppity and exploding in self-righteous rage), you can't really look at this as fact now, can you?

I agree, I'm not really believing this rumour...but at the same time, it could be true because Zac specified he wanted to work on the West End and its not beyond the realm of possibility.

The only thing I find a bit hard to believe is that Zac said he wanted to be taken 'seriously', so he was going to act on stage to prove he wasn't just some pretty boy prancing about in sugar coated Disney films. Which I agree is a great idea, but Joseph isn't exactly going to move away from the pigeon holing.

Yeah, if you have doubts...YouTube him singing live, granted theres only a bit but you get the idea he does have natural ability and its not totally computerized.

Oh and Zac will have plenty of offers for films right now, he's hot property and has been and will be for years.

Think about it, since 2006;
-High School Musical.
-Hairspray.
-High School Musical 2.
-Me and Orson Welles.
-High School Musical 3.
-17 Again.

Then the possibilities of Footloose etc.

At this stage in his life and career though, there aren't many West End musical roles he could convincingly take. Joseph would probably be his best bet (unless he wanted to pigeon-hole himself for LIFE and do Hairspray, but that... just so not happening XD). If he wants srs bzns (serious) credibility, stick with films. If he wants musical credibility, then Joseph would be a totally good idea.

Bingo.
Disney also wanted a certain pop sound for Troy, but also a young look.... so the used Seeley's voice (for he looked too old) and Efron's face for the first movie.

So we've established that Zac didn't sing in the first HSM because it was written as a tenor part. Then he sang in the later ones because they wrote the part lower.
But the point is, Joseph is a tenor part. Zac Efron is not a tenor. Therefore, he should not have been casted in the role. Period.

"Cast", not "casted". And lo, we return to the "it's just a rumour" thing. re: This is one stunt-casting move I'm happy isn't on Broadway... good luck

But wait! Haven't people sometimes been known to improve on their range after a number of years of serious training? Hmmm... nah, that'd be FAR too obvious a rebuttal. Let's just stick to "IT'S NOT A FACTUALLY TRUE PIECE OF NEWS". ^_^

First of all, thanks for the grammar correction haha. And second, you make a very good point about improving one's range. We'll have to wait and see how he does to make any assumptions.

He's not Shia LaBouf, so I doubt he's getting many non-musical/high school drama type roles offered to him.
and I'll still know Shia LaBeouf best as Louis Stevens.

I remember there being an interview with Effron when Hairspray was coming out. He spoke about how he didn't sing in the first High School Musical because the songs were written too high for him to sing because they were written for a tenor. I remember people on here laughing because the role of Link is a tenor role.
