In a review from the Broadway Rocks concert here in Fort Worth, it says:
"Opposite [Darius de Haas] was Tina Turner ... well, not really, but Virginia Ann Woodruff came really close as she strutted across the stage during 'Proud Mary'. As it turns out, 'Proud Mary' is not from a Broadway show just yet. But it will be incorporated in a new production based on Tina Turner's biopic What's Love Got to Do With It?"
This is the first I have heard of this... does anyone have any info on this. Just curious...

If they translated the movie to the stage (verbatim), I would run and go see it.
Who would you cast as Tina and Ike?

Freaky, she is the first person I thought of (and Montego Glover).
I thought about Colman Domingo for Ike, but realized he lacks the larger size and power of him.

The Ike and Tina music has a definite theatrical oomph to it, and lord knows their live shows are theatrical but, after THE COLOR PURPLE and NEW YORK, NEW YORK, are we really sure wife-beating and musical numbers go together?
And there just isn't ANYONE who could recreate Tina's soul....and I don't mean the musical genre. When the woman performs, she is sharing something genunely unique with you.

Another portion of the musical, the Post says, involves an Egyptian setting that involves Hatshepsut — who ruled Egypt from 1479-1458 BC — and Hatshepsut's evil stepson, Thutmose III.
"The Egyptian queen watches over Tina," the Post says. "When Ike pulls a gun on Tina, Hatshepsut shields her and the gun 'leaps' out of Ike's hand."
LMAO! WTF?!!! Seriously?!!

Posted: 4/9/11 at 4:38pmI think Tina believes she may have been Hatshepsut in a past life. I think that's what the song "I Might Have Been Queen" is about.

I would love to see What's Love Got To Do With It made into a Broadway show. I loved the movie and have seen Tina in concert 5 times since the Private Dancer tour in the 1980's.
My thoughts on who would play a great Tina on Broadway would be Heather Headley, LaChanze or Elisabeth Withers-Mendes.

I have long thought this film would make a great musical. The subject matter is a bit difficult, I'd think... but the big numbers (Shake a Tail Feather, Fool in Love, Proud Mary, What's Love Got to Do With It?" Would just be awesome. If they could throw in "Can't Believe What You Say (When I See What You Do) and the harrowing NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS you're talking solid gold.
Woohoo.
