Even if some of the nominees and winners seem obvious from our own impressions, popularity and reviews, there is ALWAYS a few nominees and winners that make us go...WTF?!
Any guesses about unlikely happenings at this year Tonys?
TO CLARIFY MY POST: Some people get nominations and/or wins for politics, etc. not necessarily for artistic merit. Think LBB taking the nomination over Chenoweth, for example.
I think it'll come as a "surprise" to more than a few people if XANADU takes the top prize this year...
Funny that you mention, I was thinking Xanadu might get away with more than we think.
Stew winning Best Actor.
Anyone other than Patti winning Best Actor.
Little Mermaid being nominated for Best Score.
Robin de Jesus for Featured Actor (In the Heights) , perhaps?

I though Mermaid was not deemed eligible for Best Score?
It is eligible.
Bucchino and Fierstein walking off with Book and Score. I STILL think that the chance of a rock/pop show winning two years in a row are slim. Plus, they (the voters) like to award up and coming writers. I have doubts about Stew or the guy that wrote In the Heights coming up with something else. Even after the terrible reviews he has gotten (he deserved better, let me tell you) I think Bucchino is the most likely out of all the possible nominees (Stew, Miranda, Bucchino and Menken I am presuming) to be a contributor to future musical theatre efforts.
That's my only "big surprise of the night" idea. I think what everyone has been predicting so far will happen.

A Best Musical nomination for TLM.
Well, it's interesting that 3 of the Tony Award producers are the Shubert Org., Liz McCann and Joey Parnes. I DO think $$$ and politics, as usual, will play a large part. I would love to be a fly on the wall during the bribe season!?
Not noms or wins, but
Seeing musical numbers from many shows even if not nominated, or even from other seasons, a RENT tribute would be fitting.
TLM seems like a long shot, but I'm thinking Best Musical could very well be:
Passing Strange
In The Heights
Young Frankenstein
Xanadu
Another one that could be possible: O'Hara or Russell not getting a nomination.

GREASE getting a nomimation in any category other than Best Revival

Curtis Holbrook getting a best supporting actor nod
That would make my year...

Best musical nom. for Little Mermaid.
In the Heights being nominated or winning for best book would surprise me.
Kerry Butler winning for xanadu. I love her and shes fantastic from what I hear but since its lupone's tony, butler of all 5 people to win it would be a huge surprise!

after seeing all the shows, I think Butler deserves it.
Kerry Butler winning her Tony.
Kerry Butler winning her Tony would make my year!

I think it would be a "surpise" if A Catered Affair isn't nominated for best musical. I also think it's plausible. If "Glory Days" is good, I see it edging A Catered Affair.
Don't know why, it just feels that way.
Also,
Best Supporting Actor nod for David Pittu.
cry baby wins best show.
Uh... NO!
blaxx, I'm with you on the best new musical nominations. After looking at the reviews for A Catered Affair, I think YF has a great chance at a nomination.
