Anyone wanna predict some nominations/awards?
I expect that 'Anything Goes' will repeat its 1988 Tony success which garnered 10 nominations - I'd say Joel Grey and Sutton Foster will be nominated along with a nom for Best Revival...

This definitely isn't the year for musical revivals. Anything Goes and How to Succeed are the only ones, correct?

Unless Godspell randomly books a theater & opens before the season is done (which will probably not happen) then it looks like it.
Which I wish would happen. I've always had a soft spot for Godspell and I can not tell why.
I'm hoping How To Succeed copies it's 1995 success ..... love that show!
If I may be honest, and until reviews come out and settle the playing field, I feel there isn't going to be any one show that has a runaway amount of nominations. There is alot of original material and I think the wealth is going to be spread quite a bit...
And on that note...LAURA BENANTI/BEST FEATURED ACTRESS (MUSICAL)/WOMEN ON THE VERGE...
I'm hedging my bets early for Book of Mormon to take best musical.
Scottsboro Boys for best choreography with Stroman.
War Horse for Best Play.
Al Pacino.
Those are the only ones I have any confidence in right now...
I think the only two (besides revival) Anything Goes has a shot at are actress and featured actor. And if Joel Grey gets it, I'm sure it'll be more sentimental than anything.
It would be nice if Laura Osnes got a nod for BFA/M
It's honestly going to be the Featured categories that are generating the most buzz this year.
Hopefully, Ben Walker and BBAJ will take home Best Actor and Musical...(Here's hoping!)
ooo- I forgot about Ben Walker! I do sincerely hope he takes Best Actor. I wouldn't mind if BBAJ took score, but I think the book made the show itself a little too weak to take the whole schebang. Also, Tony voters are such fickle money-whores that they seem to frequently shove their Best Musical votes to shows with marketing potential, and I don't know if BBAJ has enough of that. Mormon at least has the South Park guys behind it.
I actually really liked the WOTV score, so I hope it at least gets nominated.

I honestly don't see that happening. Hope is just such a kind of there role. I have seen several regional productions where Hope has been played by actresses who I have highly enjoyed in other shows and you just don't really notice them. The only production where I even remember anything about Hope's performance was sadly because she was awful.
And in this script (I believe they are using the Lincoln Center script, and please correct me if I am wrong), her only solo moment is the, again, instantly forgettable "Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye." Not exactly the type of material that makes you go "that girl deserves a Tony award."
I think it's pretty clear that there is no way in hell BBAJ will win Best Musical. It'll be closed for like six months by time the Tony Awards are handed out. And probably long forgotten. The second half of this season is chock-full of exciting shows, if you ask me. Lets just hope they live up to their respective potentials.

See, here's the thing: I think Book Of Mormon will either be hysterical and everyone will love it, or it will be entirely too offensive for critics. Anything Goes will be nominated. H2$ will win awards, but I have a feeling Daniel won't win one unless he really wows the critics.
From what I hear, BOOK OF MORMON is a lot more than just an offensive, envelope-pushing show. With Parker and Stone behind it, I'm sure it has a huge heart. I think the critics will love it. I could totally see it winning Best Musical. It's a totally original musical that seems poised to be a crowd-pleaser. But then again, how well would it play in middle America if the tour voters hold as much clout as they are perceived to?
If it is deemed TOO raunchy/off-color for tour profitability, the award will probably be between SISTER ACT and CATCH ME IF YOU CAN. CATCH ME has a lot of work to do, though. It's got some major problems, technically speaking. Not that SISTER ACT doesn't, but from what I hear, Douglas Carter Beane is really overhauling the book, which is a great sign.
Predictions at this stage of the game are totally pointless, though. Fun, but pointless. I don't think anyone thought MEMPHIS would last more than a month or two last year, let alone win Tonys for Best Book, Best Score, and Best Musical.

I don't think Mormon will be too offensive for critics at all. Parker and Stone actually seem to tread lighter than usual when they deal with Mormons, not that it impacts how hilarious they are in the least. South Park does some pretty audacious things, but TV critics nearly always take its side in the disputes- mainly because it's just so consistently good.
I think the big question is if Parker and Stone can get past the cheap fart and potty humor jokes they sometimes get trapped in and do something really smart.
I am praying that VERGE will be remembered for score. It truly deserves a nomination. Hopefully the nominating committee can hear the cast album before making their decisions.
The Book of Mormon
Catch Me If You Can
The Scottsboro Boys
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
I would not mind if the best score category turned out like that!

If WOTV gets nominated in score over BBAJ, I will be seriously upset.
What about Sister Act? Anyone think that will play in at all? I'm not particularly excited for it...
No comment on BLOODY.
SISTER ACT's score is pure bubblegum. It's fun, catchy, zippy, and has some crappy lyrics. It's enjoyable, but not in the same league as say SCOTTSBORO or VERGE.
I really don't think WOTV or BBAJ will get a score nomination. Like I said, BBAJ will probably be long forgotten, and WOTV's notices for the score were way too down the middle (although I personally thought it was a fine score).
I think it'll be SISTER ACT, CATCH ME, & MORMON for sure, with that last slot open to either SCOTTSBORO, WOTV, or BBAJ. And I really think that last slot hinges on whether or not SCOTTSBORO comes back to Broadway for Tony time.
In a world where Starmites has a Best Musical nomination, don't write off Spiderman just yet....

For Best Musical, I'd say at this point Catch Me if You Can, Sister Act and The Book of Mormon are safe bets. I'd give the fourth spot to The Scottsboro Boys for the sentimentality factor of it being Kander and Ebb's last show. It depends if enough people saw it. Priscilla is hot on its heels, though.
For Best Actor, I'd say Aaron Tveit and Norbert Leo Butz could nab dual nominations (Tveit has a better shot mainly because Butz has won before). Tony Sheldon for Priscilla is a safe bet (or Swenson, depending on category placement). As long as Daniel Radcliffe doesn't crash and burn he has a pretty good shot. That fifth spot could go to Rannells or Gad from The Book of Mormon, Josh Henry from Scottsboro, or Ben Walker from Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.
Sutton Foster, Donna Murphy and Patina Miller are all heavyweight contenders for Best Actress and I can see any of them winning at this point. Beyond those three, the category seems a little weak - Beth Leavel for Baby It's You, Janet Dacal for Wonderland, and Rose Hemingway for H2S seem to be the only other big contenders.
The Featured Actor contenders include Christopher J. Hanke or John Laroquette for H2S, Joel Grey for Anything Goes, John Cullum for Scottsboro, Tom Wopat for Catch Me if You Can, Will Swenson for Priscilla. Patrick Page could slip in for being a bright spot in that mess at the Foxwoods. The Catch Me if You Can producers might be smart to campaign Norbert Leo Butz here - he takes a bit of a backseat to Tveit and has a much better shot here.
For Featured Actress, we're looking at Victoria Clark for Sister Act, Nikki M. James for The Book of Mormon (I hear her role is great), Kerry Butler who steals most of Catch Me if You Can with one ballad, Jessica Walter for Anything Goes, and Tammy Blanchard for H2S.
Is someone going to admonish me for predicting nominations for shows nobody's seen yet?

Laura Benanti? Patti LuPone? Victoria Clark isn't even official yet.

Sherie Rene Scott needs to at least be mentioned.

ljay, I know you're a fan of the show, but the fact is Women on the Verge was absolutely panned and eviscerated by critics. It's a punchline in the theatre world and closed in January. It has an uphill battle to a Tony nomination for sure. Laura Benanti has a pretty good shot, but I sincerely doubt Scott, LuPone or Yazbeck will be nominated, especially in such a competitive year for new musicals.
Ok, you're the expert!
How soon we forget that the panned CRY-BABY was nominated for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book!

I'm going to make a Tonys eligibility chart for each of the musical categories. I'll post it later and update it as official rulings are made.
