Sweet Charity: F
I'll add something to my grades *they were from the perspective of the audience as I was at Radio City on Sun.*
After watching back the tape:
Spelling Bee: A
Spamalot: B
DRS: C+
Charity: C-
La Cage: B-
TLITP: B+
Watched 'em all again this morning because at the party I was at, it was kinda hard to be UN-biased about things, (aka- sitting next to a huge NLB fan might just affect reactions to the "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" number).
First off... as many others have said, what the HELL were the camera men doing for the entire telecast??? There were more screwed up shots and missed moments by cutting to an insanely far wide shot than I care to recall. Esp. in the "Spamalot" number they should have had at least ONE close shot on David Hyde Pierce. It took me forever to figure out who said, "Apparently." (Chris Sieber.... right?) Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have Tony Awards rehearsals so the cameramen can have a ballpark idea of where the important action is taking place on the stage?
With that rant:
DRS - Heh. The way they bleeped Norbert, it made it sound like he was having microphone trouble. Weird. And did anyone else notice his near mess-up on the changed "Really classy ****!" line?? "Really sh-- Nice crap!" Hehe. ((B))
Piazza - I dunno. It bored me a bit, to be quite honest. It looked lovely, but... eah... the energy was flat. The hat in the air was awesome, though. ((B-))
Spamalot - Repeating about stupid cameras. They totally cut off Hank Azaria during the end dance, too. ((A))
La Cage - Again with the energy thing. The dancing was very nice and it CLEARLY showed why the show won for choreography.. I think they would have held attention a bit better with some actual VOCALS, though, (I kept waiting for "I Am What I Am" and felt a bit cheated when it didn't show up) ((C))
Spelling Bee - Very cute. Again a lack of vocals, though. These are musicals, aren't they?? Al Sharpton was a nice touch!! ((A-))
Sweet Charity - Highly forgettable. Too many songs. No cohesion. I used to be a fan of medleys, but this showed me the dark side of picking a medley. ((D))
Kay, the Thread-Jacking Jedi
Quando omni flunkus moritati (When all else fails, play dead...)
"... chasin' the music. Trying to get home."
Peter Gregus: "Where are my house right ladies?!"
(love you, girls! - 6/13/06)
I mean this from a purely artistic sense, but did anyone feel like Big Spender lost its legendary sultriness? I coudl tell they tried..but soemthign was off.
Yeah...the orchestrations and the camera angles were off...way off...and that happened in each musical number. It was sad to watch the casts of EACH show struggle to keep up with whoever the hell was conducting.
