As much as I wanted to despise Spamalot's performance (I would marry Spelling Bee if it was a human being LOL), I just couldnt. Sara was great but I was a little annoyed that she sang 3/4 of the song. I wanted some more Tim, Hank, Michael, Christopher, and of course David but Sara was wickedly funny and sung the song brilliantly.
And as much as I wanted to love DRS, I couldnt. It was good but it wasnt nearly as good as I expected it to be. It seemed very messy because of the "bleeps" which was pointless to me. They should have just done another song.
I don't know, maybe I just don't get it, but the performance from "Spelling Bee" just didn't do it for me at all...I was like, "What the hell, they're not DOING ANYTHING..." I really wanted to see it, now, not so much. I felt that it was a bad song to do, simply because it didn't showcase much of anything. "Piazza" and "Spamalot" had the best performances, at least to me.

dont let these performances ruin your outlook on it! DRS won all these audience and viewers choices awards for a reason! lol.
La Cage-B I admire the dancers...they're awesome. Piazza- A I want to see it about how much I wanted to see it before Spelling Bee- A same as above Dirty Rotten Scoundrels- B- Doesn't seem like my kind of musical...and didn't think Norbert was that great...good but not great...then again, I haven't seen the whole thing Spamalot- B Don't hate me for saying this...but I think Sara's voice is a wee bit annoying. I thought it was just because she was sick, but then listened to the soundtrack and still feel the same way. There are some parts where she sounds fantastic, and other parts...I just don't dig it. She seemed like a really sweet, down to earth person thought. Charity- C Well...I felt like Christina gave a very good high school performance. I admire her lots for doing her thing, but it just didn't come off very well.

I watched the awards with three people who haven't seen any of the nominated shows (I saw all but La Cage and Bee). It was very interesting to see their reactions.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: They thought it was terrible. It was a total WTF moment, and they usually like funny shows. I was disappointed too, it works much better in the show. They should have done Dirty Rotten Number. I give it a

Light in the Piazza: I love this show, and quickly tried to explain to them what was going on. The beginning was a bit weird with Victoria walking up to the camera with a hand held mike. I had to explain that this is NOT part of the show. Besides that I thought it was beautiful as did they

La Cage: Since I haven't seen the show yet I was disappointed that they didn't sing. The dancers were great, and when I explain to the people with me that they were men they were very impressed. However, we kept waiting for something more. I felt bad for Gary Beach having do dress up in drag just for 5 seconds of stage time.
-- C
Spelling Bee: the other show that none of us saw. It was ironic because earlier that day my sister and I were watching a televised Spelling Bee and marvelling at these little kids. We got an extra kick out of it because of that. The jokes were hilarious and we were laughing a lot.
-- A
Spamalot: I was disappointed when hearing that this was the song that they were going to do. If they wanted a group number that showed Rameriz and Curry they could have performed a cut version of Knights of the Round Table. The only guy with us thought that the "legs were cool" when they shot up.
-- B
Sweet Charity: I thought it was very smart to put Hey Big Spender in it and that the medley was their best option. Everyone I was with last night knew that song. The they got to showcase Christina Applegate and show off the dancing. Smart.

PS: After last night one person said that they'd be interested in seeing Spelling Bee and another Spamalot.
I want to write music. I want to sit down right now at my piano and write a song that people will listen to and remember and do the same thing every morning...for the rest of my life. - Jonathan Larson. Tick, Tick...BOOM!
DRS - B+ (although I still think they should have done "Dirty Rotten Number"...) La Cage - B Piazza - B Spamalot - A Spelling Bee - A Sweet Charity - C
Spamalot: C+ (Sara sounded beautiful, but didn't care for the song)
La Cage aux Folles: B- (Great dancing... but not enough Beach & Goulet, and it seemed repetitive after a while)
Sweet Charity: C+ (Christina didn't seem to be in good voice, but she was adorable and really worked it. On the flip side, "Brass Band" was flat and laughably anticlimactic)
Spelling Bee: A (Best performance, I believe. Funny, cute, and had me sold. It actually made me want to see the show.)
Light in the Piazza: B (Nice vocals with nice moments. Forgot about it five minutes later.)
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: B- (The number was fine, but I've really had enough of this song. Too much Butz, and not enough Lithgow.)
DRS: A- would have been an A if they let greg say his line from the opening instead of giving it to john La Cage: B+, was waiting for gary to come back on stage and sing "i am what i am" but alas the moment never came Spelling Bee: A+ my dad immediately started with how stupid it was until they full got going then he said "we have got to see this show" Piazza: A- the hat wire was a little jerky, when victoria come on with a hand mic i was so upset for her, i feared that her mic went out on her big night. Spamalot: A- it was so funny seeing the perfectly python-esque staging finally especially the set Sweet Charity: pre-christina's part C, it was a kinda clumsy staging of big spender but sung well enough post christina D-
"Grease," the fourth revival of the season, is the worst show in the history of theater and represents an unparalleled assault on Western civilization and its values. - Michael Reidel
DRS: B (Yay for Norbie but everything else about it was boring and it didn't make too much sense out of context.)
Piazza: A (O'Hara has the purest, clearest, most beautiful voice I've heard in FOREVER. Victoria can also sing like none other, too. The whole performance was beautiful and the whole hat just touched my heart.)
Charity: C+ (But not for Christina. I thought Big Spender was thrilling and Christina danced her heart out, and i thought her singing voice was good for the role, just not that night. But the choreography is REALLY sloppy in the group numbers and those costumes, especially for Brass Band, were HIDEOUS.)
La Cage: A- (Les Cagelles are just amazing. I would have given this an A+ had we seen Gary's "I Am What I Am".)
Spelling Bee: A (The best performance of the evening, probably. I didn't give it an A+ just because I feel they should have tried to allow more of the cast a chance at the mic.)
Spamalot: B - (I was unimpressed. Sara was AMAZING but I REALLY think they should have picked a different song. This one, I don't think, caught the mood of the show well and with such an ensemble cast, they needed to show everyone off more.)
You guys are all curving your grades, aren't you....
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: C+ La Cage aux Folles: B The Light in the Piazza: B- Monty Python's Spamalot: C Sweet Charity: D+ 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee: B
Blah, I suppose I'm alone here, I was turned off by it. IT's okay, I like being on the outside. I think my favorite part of the "Spamalot" performance, was that Sara was making fun of EXACTLY what Aretha Franklin came on and did. All that malismatic bull sh*t, she's totally mocking...it's awesome...love it!
I haven't seen any of the shows so it was interesting to see the performances.
DRS: B good but I agree it was the wrong song. Piazza: A beautiful Charity: C ehhhhhh La Cage: B+ impressive dancing, not enough singing Spelling Bee: A I loved it! Very funny! Spamalot: C+ unimpressed. Made me wonder what all the hype is about.
Based on the performances, the only shows I wanted to see were Light in the Piazza and Spelling Bee.
I think that the shows, despite best intentions, can never really be accurately portrayed due to time constraints. They have to amend the numbers and they just don't work as well, period.
Back in the day (like the Evita years) shows were given much longer time frames to show their stuff so to speak. But they didn't have as many categories then, so I guess that's what eats up the time. And yes like somebody questioned, they were lip-synching but it was a recorded live track not like a cast album or something.
And I actually liked the Dirty Rotten number. I was going to see it before the Tonys and now I want to a little bit more. I have no desire to see Spamalot. Still want to see Piazza and def. want to see La Cage. I thought the dancers were the most amazing thing on the whole show last night. Sweet Charity-eeeh?
