yeaah Christina Applegate wasnt doing too well in my opinion. Does she really sing like that all the time? I mean I dont think shes awful, shes good, but not as good as I expected her to be. I'm not really familiar with Sweet Charity, but I was expecting a really powerful singer.
"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."
If you compare the shows to "A New Argentina" from Evita in 1980, they all rate an "F". Very few Tony performances have been able to generate that kind of buzz.
Rumor has it that immediately after the Evita Tony performance, phone lines in Manhattan were jammed for two hours straight.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I wasn't expecting much from Christina Applegate. She delivered a much stronger performance than I thought she would. I was pleased and I'm sure I had a big, cheesy grin throughout her performance. Now I am 100% positive that I must see Sweet Charity this summer.
Cut down version of mine is: La Cage- A+ Piazza-A Spam.- A

Charity isn't a singing role. It was written for Gwen Verdon, an amazing performer, but she had a very limited range. This role has been played by some Broadway legends not known for their singing voices.
ahhh thank you ljay, I figured that that would be the case. Makes sense thank you thank you

Whether or not Christina's voice is ok for the part or if she's supposed to be able to sing or whatever...she didn't do much for herself or the show with the performance.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I like Bobby's grades except I'd switch Spamalot and DRS and give Charity a bit higher. Eh, it'll look like this:
DRS: B Piazza: A Charity: C+ La Cage: B+ Spelling Bee: A Spamalot: B-
And I only give Spamalot that high only because it was nice to see someone better than Sara's understudy singing. I thought the number didn't work at all on TV.
The "purpose" of these mini productions is to entice those in a national audience to see these shows. Based on this premise (and I haven't seen any of these productions)
Definitely want to see Spelling Bee Piazza
Would consider seeing La Cage
Thought I'd like to see but having second thoughts Spamalot DRS
Thought I's like to see but having 2nd, 3rd & 4th thoughts Charity
Oh! My grades, totally forgot: Piazza: A Spelling Bee: A DRS: B La Cage: B (only because of the fabulous Les Cagelles, thanks in no part to the horrible camera editing) Spamalot: B- Sweet Charity: C
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
DRS: D La Cage: A Spelling Bee: C Piazza: A Spamalot: D Sweet Charity: C

ugh! dont let the DRS performance make you not wanna see it! this show is amazing and there are so many elements that led up to it not sounding as good as it could have. spamalot was just bad cuz i thought the music was boring lol....my grades
Spelling Bee- A Sweet Charity- pfft D La Cage- A- DRS- B+ but during the actual show its like A+++++ Spamalot- ick...C lol.

I thought all the performances sucked last night. They were all the wrong songs, too much dancing and not enough singing. None of the stars except Norbert and Christina were really showcased/ They seemed obsessed with featuring large groups of people this year more than in past years. I would have loved to have seen La Cage do the same thing it did in 1983 as that was much better.
You are young, life has been kind to you. You will learn.
I'm guessing that SPAMALOT is fantastic live b/c the performance last night, to me, was not bad at all. I know all the men did was sort of bumble around and look stupid. I think they were the reason it was not-so-well received.
Was Sara wearing a different costume than she normally wears as "Lady of the Lake"? Maybe I have only seen her in one of her costumes. Anybody clarify? Thanks.
Besides SPELLING BEE (please somebody tell me WHAT IN THE HELL was up with the Reverend Al Sharpton, please! I am way out of the loop, I guess.), LA CAGE, & maybe PIAZZA, I'd like to not think about the others.
Spelling Bee: B Piazza: A DRS: A La Cage: B- Spamalot: B- Charity: D
And a question about "A New Argentina" on DVD. Was this really lip-synched at the Tonys or is the DVD's sound just "off"? I only ask because it sure looked like Patti was singing her heart out. Thanks.
