Tonys "Hamilton" Might Not Win

Forgive me if I'm duplicating but the "Shuffle Along"/"Hamilton" choreography thread -- and seeing both shows last weekend -- has me thinking about other shows that might pluck an award from the "Hamilton" juggernaut. Savion Glover seems to have a pretty good chance but what else? Ann Roth's costumes for "Shuffle Along" also struck me as slightly more compelling than the "Hamilton" costumes. Most people seem to think Errivo will beat Soo for best actress in a musical. What else? Might "American Psycho" win for its lighting?

Tonys

It won't win Leading Actress. Besides that, it has a good chance in every category.

Tonys

I don't think "Hamilton" is a lock for all their categories at all. In terms of Choreography, I think Savion should win. It's far better, as well as the previous mentioned Lighting for "American Psycho", and I'll throw in Set Design for "She Loves Me" - these three awards for these three productions are done better than "Hamilton", and they should logically win in my book. Who knows, though. I mean, Jonathan Groff got nominated just to break a record, so maybe they'll tie the vote to make two actors win, upping their total win count. Tonys are about money and exposure, not art.

The only two I see it not winning are set design and choreography.

And it may end up with those as well.

Choreography, Set Design, Lead Actress, Lighting, Featured Actress (tho I think REG will win).

I think scenic design will be a tossup hopefully favoring She Loves Me. From what I recall of Hamilton's set, there was a revolving floor, wooden staircase, and some chairs.

#7

Tonys

Leading Actress, Featured Actor (I think the Hamilton boys may cancel one another out), Scenic Design, Lighting Design, possibly Costume Design.

Tonys

Featured actor is Chris Fitzgerald's to lose.

In what race? Daveed Diggs is winning that Tony.

Tonys

Neon....did you even read what Starcatchers wrote?

Tonys

Yes, did you? When someone says "to lose" that means they think the person is going to win.

...Cinders, did you?

#13

Tonys

It will win them all.

It has to break the record! It absolutely has to!

#14

Tonys

Cinders is my favorite poster here because he routinely attacks me when he has no idea what he's talking about.

#15

Tonys

My mistake, I didn't know that's what it meant. I've never heard that before. I'm not going to buy into this drama, but I didn't and have never attacked you.

I think it could lose 3 of the 4 acting categories. I think only Diggs should be sitting pretty. Leslie deserves it, but he might split with Lin and give it to Danny. Renee deserves it as well, but I think Danielle Brooks could sneak in.

I don't even want to think about Cynthia not winning that Tony.

#17

Tonys

y'all are crazy if you think Renée and Daveed at LEAST aren't winning. Leslie should but I could see an upset. Phillipa won't. I don't think Groff was nominated just to break the record. As for splitting the vote... I felt that Emily Skeggs was an extraneous nomination last year and possibly split the vote, in my opinion either Judy Kuhn or Sydney Lucas should have won.

Really? You think Groff was nominated just to break a record? or that over 800 voters will conspire to "up" Hamilton's count? If they are about "money and exposure" then wouldn't they want someone else to win...so they too could make some bank?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I think it has the creative awards in the bag. I really believe it will win 3/4 acting awards too, all except leading actress.

The technical awards could go either way for me. I think it will either win them all or only a couple. The voters could be in the frame of mind where they want to see one show win big and bring more attention towards the Tonys by overly awarding the show that everyone is talking about. However, if they truly go off what is best, I could see it losing stuff like choreography, set design and costumes quite easily. I really think it will win lighting though as not only is the lighting for Hamilton great but the Tonys do not seem to care about American Psycho in the slightest.

Philippa Soo won't win. I think Diggs is the only Hamilton acting lock, but I do think Renee will win. I want She Loves Me to win set, and Savion Glover to win choreography (which I think he will). I also think American Psycho will win lights and Best Director, while probably going to Tommy Kail, could theoretically go to someone else (if not Kail, I want Arden to win).

I do, dramamama611. Of course, that's just my opinion. I would have rather seen any other "Hamilton" actor get that third nomination. It wasn't deserved. Again, my opinion. And I love Jonathan, too, so very much. I've been a fan for years, and I hope he comes back soon in a real Tony-worthy role. This role was not that role. Also, nothing will make more money than a headline about how the show has the most Tony wins in history. That's just a fact. Ticket sales will go even higher, and in turn, the rest of the new musicals (and revivals) will get a secondary prize of being the consolation show to go to. Which is great, if you think about it. "Well, we can't get tickets to 'Hamilton', so let's go see 'Bright Star' instead. It was nominated, too."

I have a feeling that Danny Burstein will win for Fiddler as sort of a "yeah we should probably finally give him one" sort of thing.

Plus, I would find it very strange for the guy playing Burr to win over the guy playing Hamilton. That's like Javert beating Jean Valjean to a best leading actor award. Technically, the only "lead" character in Hamilton is Hamilton. They clearly petitioned Odom and Soo for leading so there'd be more room for nominations in the featured categories. I imagine they did the same thing with the original Les Miz, which is why Terrance Mann got nominated as "leading."

#23

Tonys

I think Leslie is a lead through and through. Aaron Burr is the show, in my opinion - maybe once casting changes I will change my mind.

Danny's Tevye is so good that I don't want people to think he's just winning by default like happened with actress last year.

Of all the Tony conspiracy theories that get bandied about each year, this has to be the funniest I've heard yet. How do you believe they are planning this together? Group texts? A secret Facebook page? Tribal council with Jeff Probst? Do the voters take their lead from the nominations committee wants or is it one conspiracy led by both groups in two parts? And who are the annual anonymous sources who always leak the plan to Riedel and make him look like an idiot for being wrong every time?

I didn't think there was any question that Burr was a leading character. As far as stage time, number of songs and impact on the show, Burr has a very, very significant presence in the show. If you compared Burr to the the characters in the show deemed "featured" it is apples to oranges.
