I don't know, I feel like Salieri and Judas are bigger roles than Burr. I never really got the impression that Hamilton was told from Burr's POV.

Could it be that supporting actor replicate last year's supporting actress scenario? Could be. If Cynthia Erivo wins Actress, Lin Manuel-Miranda or Leslie Odom, Jr. win Actor, and Renee Elise Goldsberry wins supporting, that means that three categories have minority winners. Given that supporting actor is (in my opinion) the most up for grabs, I think that Christopher Fitzgerald has a very strong shot of winning. First off, he would be the lone non-minority winner, and secondly, this is his third nomination-- I think that he really could win this.

It's hard to say; but he's certainly narrating the story, even if the POV is objective.

I would LOVE Christopher Fitzgerald to win. But how is he a minority? Like the show Waitress wins a minority of the awards?

I'm not sure how you missed it, considering Burr talks to the audience multiple times about Hamilton and his place in the story..

hork, did you see Hamilton?

He's a minority because I am stupid and forgot to type 'non' in front of minority. #fixed

Wait, is the argument that Christopher Fitzgerald will have a better chance to win because he's white and the voters wouldn't want to award four black acting winners? How exactly does that work?

OH MY GOD. Daveed Diggs is going to win Featured Actor. Everybody knows this. End this asinine conversation before it spirals into a classic BWW descent right now. I can't watch this happen.

They'd better have some spectacular performances this year, because "The Hamilton Award Show" is going to get boring reeeally fast.

More importantly, are we for real arguing that Chris Fitzgerald is going to win because otherwise no white people will win an acting award for a musical? What white nonsense is this?

I don't think I was arguing-- I was playing out a scenario. I think it's a real possibility. The other categories are slam dunks, I think, and this would be the one where there could be a surprise. It's like that song in Avenue Q-- Everybody's a little bit racist... and when votes are split (like they will be for Hamilton in the supporting actor category), a shocking winner can happen.

#63

Tonys

If the Tony voters really would be that uncomfortable awarding four Tonys to black actors, it's not like there aren't plenty of white actors in the Play categories who are likely to win. I'm not saying that there's never racism involved in entertainment awards (hello #OscarsSoWhite!), but the assertion that Christopher Fitzgerald will win a Tony because the voters can't bear to have no white people win is patently ridiculous. I get that a Hamilton sweep will be boring to watch, but come on.

No but really you guys. The other two featured actor noms are Christopher Fitzgerald and Brandon Victor Dixon. I truly cannot see either one winning over one of the men from Hamilton.

Personally, the one I really liked was Christopher Jackson. Long shot, but really loved his performance!

If Kinky Boots can win Choreography, Hamilton can too. If Once can win Set Design, Hamilton can too. If The Producers can win Featured Actor with three nominees from their show in the category, Hamilton can too. When the Tonys like something, they really like it.

If we're going to look at this diverse Tonys thing in a cynical way then if anything I think they would more likely want to be able to say 'look, all our acting in a musical winners are people of color, we're not like the Oscars!' There would undoubtedly be a ton of articles written about that, with the group photo of the 4 actors.

Really though, seeing Cynthia, Daveed, Leslie and Renee win would not in any way be unjust. Many people think these 4 are the best in their categories and if they do win I will trust that it is because the Tony voters thought they were the best four.

I don't think when Oscar voters vote they're specifically thinking 'better not vote for any people of color' or 'oh I voted for one black person in this category so best not in the other.' I think it's a complex issue that takes root in the casting of these films, where the vast majority of roles in Oscar-bait films go to white people. Then it's the fact that a large proportion of the voters are old white men that will probably have a more emotional reaction to films that feature characters that look like them or come from their background. Most of the Oscar-bait films that feature black people center around slavery/racism, which rightly paints the white man as the villain. This is not like Daveed in Hamilton, where he is actually playing two white men.

In short, if Christopher Fitzgerald did win the Tony it would not be because he is white.

My only one of these is that I think the choreography in Shuffle Along is SO GOOD and it works so well for the show! The choreography in Hamilton is good, but in my opinion, it's not nearly as good as Shuffle Along's.

And I think Daveed will win, and he deserves to, the whole thing was that something could happen like with Fun Home last year, and Fitzgerald could sweep in and win it.

Also I want She Loves Me to win Set Design. Because the set is beautiful and also services the production so well.

I think actually the title of the award is "Best Performance by an Actor/Actress in a Leading/Featured Role in a Musical/Play."

You are correct. I wonder if that changed at some point because I remember it being listed differently in the past. Even the Tony website names the categories inconsistently. Regardless, the categories are still determined by billing first. Otherwise, people like Daisy Eagan, Tom Bosley, Carlin Glynn and Dick Van Dyke would have won for Leading.

oh no I totally agree with you that sometimes the category seems incorrect. The automatic category does still have to do with being billed above or below the title unless the producers petition a change. I don't know if that's always been a rule though, because several times in the history of the awards the placement had just seemed incorrect.

The Music Man: Barbara Cook was under the title but Marian is clearly the leading lady, but she won for featured actress despite having about 5 songs all to herself. Maybe they didn't want competition with Gwen Verdon in New Girl in Town. But even up to now they get it wrong Matilda: Gabriel Ebert obviously should have been in featured. I believe last year (Fun Home) was the first time in history a show petitioned two actors to be in the opposite category than their billing suggested. Oh Tony Awards. they're so strange sometimes.

Folks who think Phillipa Soo's nomination was not deserved, you should listen to this TheaterTalk podcast.

She might not win because of Erivo, but that nomination did not happen just because of Hamilton's juggernaut status. She is gold.

I can see some of the logic behind Christopher Fitzgerald winning, though I definitely still believe Daveed will be the winner. I WANT Daveed to be the winner, but Fitzgerald is amazing, and if he wins, it won't be undeserving in the least. I just don't think the votes will be that split between Chris, Jon, and Daveed. While Chris gives an amazing performance and Jon is definitely a scene stealer, I think most of the voters will recognize the difficulty and brilliance of Daveed's performance in Hamilton.

I am less sure about Leslie, but I would still put my money on him. I think Renee is a definite lock.

I 100% think Shuffle Along deserves choreography, and for me, Hamilton winning it instead would be the one real upset of the night. I just don't think they are even comparable. Shuffle Along's choreography is like nothing I've ever seen before, and I hope it is recognized.

I agree with others who have said American Psycho's lighting is what makes the show, and I would like to see it recognized.

I would also LOVE for Michael Arden to pick up director, but I think his chances are heavily on the slim side.
