The automatic category does still have to do with being billed above or below the title unless the producers petition a change. I don't know if that's always been a rule though, because several times in the history of the awards the placement had just seemed incorrect.

The Music Man: Barbara Cook was under the title but Marian is clearly the leading lady, but she won for featured actress despite having about 5 songs all to herself. Maybe they didn't want competition with Gwen Verdon in New Girl in Town. But even up to now they get it wrong Matilda: Gabriel Ebert obviously should have been in featured. I believe last year (Fun Home) was the first time in history a show petitioned two actors to be in the opposite category than their billing suggested. Oh Tony Awards. they're so strange sometimes.

"

Are you saying matilda got it right? Gabriel was featured actor and won, unless you are thinking about Bertie who should have been featured.

i have to agree with A Director

This will be a Hamilton Tsunami awards program

I feel the potential for a sweep coming, with the one most obvious potential miss being best actress

Given all that Hamilton has accomplished it deserves to be the biggest Tony winner ever (certainly more so than The Producers)

oops! I meant Bertie Carvel should not have been in lead.

She might not win because of Erivo, but that nomination did not happen just because of Hamilton's juggernaut status. She is gold.

Agreed!

I agree as well. I thought Philippa was amazing when she was Natasha in the Great Comet two years ago. I was hoping she would lead in that musical with Josh Groban but I guess not.

i saw Hamilton 3 times and I thought Lin was AMAZING and better than Leslie though I may be biased since I thought Lin should have won the Tony back in 2009 for In the Heights. I also saw Sydney Harcourt perform Burr while Leslie was on vacation and I thought he and Lin did a great job when paired against each other in the show.

i wouldn't mind a Hamilton sweep though I still think Shuffle will win choreography and She Loves Me will win scenic design.

it does seem like Tony folks love love love Hamilton yet they hated hated hated Finding Neverland last year.

btw, do all Tony voters live in nyc? there seem to be so much mystery on who is in the Tony nominating committee and Tony voters. To my understanding, only the Tony nominating committee are required to see every single new show/revival on Broadway.

I would love to hear your logic for comparing the two.

Voters live all over.

The nominating committee is publicly announced/their names are known: http://www.tonyawards.com/en_US/about/admin_comm.html

I agree, in what way are the two shows at all similar?

I'm a little confused by the Daveed Diggs vs. Christopher Fitzgerald discussion only because I didn't think his performance would be a stronger contender. He had a fun little number but his portrayal didn't have as profound of an effect on me as Brandon Victor Dixon or Christopher Jackson. I also think that character just wasn't given enough material to beat out the other nominees. Interesting.

Well I think people are ruling Chris Jackson (and Jonathan Groff) out because most people think that if Daveed doesn't win it will be because of a split vote between the 3 Hamilton actors, meaning that none of them will win.

Just thought I'd bump this, since we'll know in a few hours.
