Information is only for my own personal knowledge. As far as criteria--I'd say some kind of mix between biggest budget, most prolific, and best known.

David Merrick, naturally.
Mannie Azenberg is still pretty prolific.
Roundabout, with 4 theaters and 5 performance spaces is huge.
Jeffrey Richards.
Kevin McCullum and Jeffrey Seller.

When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain.
