The 1991 film HOOK actually started out as a musical. I have the sheet music to some of the songs that you were cut. The only song that survived was "When You're Alone" which was nominated for an Oscar.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

The show is called 'Darling' by Ryan Scott Oliver and it is now premiering at Pace. The story is based on Peter Pan, but it is not 'Peter Pan the Musical'. The music is GORGEOUS. Here are 2 songs:
I saw the show tonight and it was 70% amazing. The music was unbelievable, so exciting. It was one of the most exciting new musicals I've seen in awhile. It had its flaws, especially in the second act. But seeing by how many industry people have been attending, and returning with more people, the show seems like it will go somewhere. The references/ parallels made to the original Peter Pan story were very tastefully and cleverly done.
It takes place in August, 1929 (Act 1) and October, 1929 (Act 2) at the start of the Great Depression.
Most likely... this person is involved with the show, considering a workshop just opened at Pace University and runs through Sunday.
I saw opening night. The music is quite good - very good, I'd dare to say. However, it desperately is in need of a new book (or bookwriter). The plot is so bizarre, and almost campy at times. And the connection to PETER PAN seems forced and practically hurts the material instead of working FOR it.
Also, the fact that it's set in 1929 is very inconsistent considering many references, jokes and dialogue are far too contemporary to ever actually happen then.
The music is fabulous (and I'm not saying this because I go to Pace - which I do) and the cast is wonderful. If you can check out the students at Pace put it on, it really is something. They're very talented and singing the hell out of a great score.

jaes, I must completely disagree with you. The references to PETER PAN are tasteless.
Lyrics like: "I'm hooked!"
A police chief (the Hook character) who runs his dealings off of a ship in Boston harbor and murders two characters with a fishing hook.
Lyrics like: "Never never never never never never never never never". (Get it?)
A gay anthem for a male prostitutes who is murdered in 1929: "Song for the Dead Fairy" that goes something like "Clap your hands if you believe..." yadayada.
In trying to seduce her into doing cocaine, which is called "fairy dust" (remember it's set in 1929 and they didn't call it that then), there's some reference to "happy thoughts".
There were more, but I figured these would suffice.

I was at the reading/performance last night. The show has SO much potential and is already very strong in its workshop state. Personally, I really enjoyed the Peter Pan parallels and found them clever and well thought-out. The music is incredible and the story intriguing. Can't wait to see/hear how this show progresses after this Pace reading.
