Well yeah, next to normal should have won. But it had the last laugh winning a Pulitzer Prize I think.
I do agree that Matilda is closer to next to normal than Kinky Boots in terms of score though. I would rather Matilda take the award for best score than best musical (even though I understand it is only the latter award that probably matters).

Posted: 5/25/13 at 11:08pmI meant that KINKY has a great shot at score, an acting award, and at least one design award. Just like N2N. Clearly, it's a very, very different show from N2N. But in this case, MATILDA certainly seems to be the BILLY ELLIOT.

*Yeah, it does.
*I love Bertie and he has a decent shot, but Billy will defientely will Best Actor! Billy sounds great!
*Yeah, defientely costume. That or Cinderella

And Kinky, I REALLY think it's going to be Matilda. Kinky's score is great and fun, but some of the songs sound the same. And I'm actually listening to Matilda (School Song) right now and the music is more original, clever, and poetic. Like how Next 2 Normal won for Best Score over BE, which won Best Musical. The musical there is more beautiful and emotional
You haven't seen 'Kinky Boots', have you? It never ceases to amaze me how you (and others) are so eager to say one is superior when you haven't seen the other, but are simply basing your opinion on a recording (an opinion you were boasting before the first listen was even made available). I have little desire to see 'Matilda' and I find the recording subpar and extremely trite, but I am in no place to say Kinky will win over Matilda, merely because I do not like Matilda's recording.
That said, the 'Next to Normal' and 'Billy Elliot' year was probably the last time the best musical race got this heated, as others have stated. However, no one was putting out a campaign as strong/consistent as Kinky Boots. 'Billy Elliot' had great publicity before and really all through its run. 'Next to Normal' opened at a great time, and was beloved by the theatre community, but its boost came after the TONYS, not before, much different than Kinky Boots and Matilda.
'9 to 5' was running a very strong campaign and many people were focused on Dolly Parton and Elton John for Best Score; I'd even argue that although Best Musical was heated that year, it took a back burner to the Best Score race between '9 to 5' and 'Billy Elliot', even though 'Next to Normal' was a community favorite, and ultimately won. I'm sure many people here recall the camera shot of Dolly backstage right after the award was presented.

I'm trying to listen to the whole CD to Kinky and I will when I have time. I'm enjoying it so far, I really am. And I will most likely buy a few songs. But, I like Matilda a little better because of the craft.
And keep in mind that I have only seen Matilda. I would love to see Kinky Boots and it sounds great, but unlike most others here, I don't have the money, location, or people to see it with. So, yes I am being protective and boastful of Matilda: not only because I enjoyed it, but that's the one that I actually know.

Boastful? How can you boast about someone else's score?
And what kind of "people" does one need to see a show?
#31Were people like this for Newsies and Once?
Posted: 5/26/13 at 12:04amTo the original question, no. Because NEWSIES isn't a good or well-constructed show. KINKY BOOTS is a lot better. I wouldn't say the passion is at the level of NEXT TO NORMAL/BILLY ELLIOT, but there are clearly a lot of supporters for both KINKY and MATILDA, and deservedly so in each of their own rights.

I only said that because of Jarque.
And I'm 19, so I need an adult to see shows.

You need a dictionary.
Um...at 19 you ARE an adult. (Legally) And no you don't...anyone can purchase a ticket.

But, with my disability and my back surgery, my parents are worried that something bad would happen. And I don't live near NYC at all. So, I have to go once or twice a year.

The interesting thing about last year vs. this year (to my mind) is whether/not Newsies or Once would be considered to be "classics" under the new ruling created for Cinderella.
Can you imagine having only Leap of Faith and Nice Work... as choices? Bonnie and Clyde would have been the only reasonable option to win "Best Score"...
If this new ruling were not made, Cinderella would feature much more heavily in these discussions, and I'm certain there'd be even more "heat".

Disney -- sorry to hear of your health issues, and I can see how that could affect one.
JohnAdams -- it is not a new ruling. Neither Once nor Newsies qualified under that ruling. They both came from off b'way/regional individual productions. Nothing "classic" about them. Just because the FILMS were around has no bearing on the stage version

Every poster on this board writes titles in regular type face.
Except one.
The reason being.....?
In any case, to get back to the topic of this thread, yes, people were just like this with respect to Newsies and Once.
Kind of ridiculous, when you come to think of it, considering how little these awards have to do with merit, anyhow.

Most people don't take the time (or know the HTML) to stylize their typefaces. I like it, just generally don't take the time as consistently as J.A., and tend to use it more for emphatic effect.
As for the OP's question, if I can be the pedantic one, of course people weren't like this because these shows weren't the ones last year. Different arbitrary picket lines get drawn each year because different people respond to different shows differently. It's an obvious point to make, but it's worth making. And After Eight raised an excellent point about the merit of the awards as merit-based. They (and any awards) very rarely are; as they say, it's all politics. I find the horseraces fascinating and the pageantry fun, but remind myself to always divorce my personal feelings from validation (or invalidation) via awards.

Actually, in JA's last post, he was just (IMO) trying to properly identify the title of the shows, which is actually good writing. (Although it should either be in quotes or italicized.)
But I have no idea why that should create a concern for anyone.

Im 95% sure Matilda is going to win. The kinky love may be happening here but its not happening out there and if it is, it came to to late. Matilda has been destined to win this award the minute it got announced it was coming to Broadway. Honestly thank god it did come over here. What an awful season it would have been if Kinky Boobs was the only real contender. Matilda has the better and smarter score and it looks like a much better production overall. I don't really care that much for either show but In my Mind MATILDA is by far superior.
As for Best Actor i don't know who will win ( Probably Bertie) But i wouldn't be all that surprised if Porter somehow took it. I don't care that much for either one and i don't care really who wins.
Patina and Andrea have it in the bag so there is no need to discuss anything about them.
No idea about supporting actor, probably Terrance though.
Director is going to PIPPIN. Obviously.
The fact that the pippin revival out shined all of the new musicals this year says a lot.
