(Remember I'm new!)
Anyway, at first, people were like, "OMG, Matilda is going to win Best Musical!" Now, people think, "Just kidding. Now, it's Kinky Boots!"
Was people like this for Newsies and Once? That people think that it will be Newsies, then changed it for Once? Were people shocked when Newsies lost to Once?
Also, were people like: "Oh, I talked to a Tony voter and said that people are voting for Once?"

Posted: 5/25/13 at 9:36amWell Newsies was the early favourite but Matilda has received much better reviews, on par with Once.

Well, folks were pretty split on who would win but I don't remember there being a big change on opinions.
What you are seeing here is a little diffeent: people here I think are equally split on which they think SHOULD win, but you cant discount the buzz from the community which has changed many minds as to who WILL win.

Yes, we know DramaMama, the crowd went NUTS for "Kinky Boots". It LOVES "Kinky Boots" more than it loves its luggage. The crowd orgasms nightly for "Kinky Boots" and would marry it if it were legal in this state. Have you mentioned how the audience goes crazy for "Kinky Boots" and loves it more than an audience has EVER loved a show?

Posted: 5/25/13 at 3:50pmThe difference this between this year and last is that Once and Newsies both received similar reviews outside of the New York Times. The race was much less political than this years in that a lot of voters are upset over the attitudes and egos of the Matilda team. The only real political element was tour sell-ability and what would the Tony do to help that. There was an article in the Post or Times that stated many road producers were voting Once because it needed the Tony to do well on the road, while Newsies was going to do well no matter what with Disney above the marquee. The real suprise of the Tonys last season was not Once winning but it sweeping with 8 awards, winning over Follies which was the most lauded production of the season. Two of the awards that are examples of the suprise sweep were set, which both Follies and Nice Works at least in my opinion are far superior and best Book which should have gone to a show with a plot which of the nominees Nice Work's book deserved to win.

Gee, Owen -- I didn't mention anything about either show specifically here. Reading into things much?
And, since you are so good at remembering things, you'll note that I have no true preference toward either show -- so why try to make "something" happen here?

This is definitely like every other awards season here on BWW.
Of course, awards season runs almost all year long here on BWW.

Posted: 5/25/13 at 4:33pmI think the other theme of last year was the corporate giant versus the crunchy granola musicians. Disney versus the composers of Once. I think by giving Once the Tony was in a sense going back to the idea that small things crafted with love are important on Broadway.

Which was wildly ironic considering each show's origin:
Newsies - based on a flop movie and never intended for Broadway
Once - based on an Oscar winning film and had Barbara Broccoli as one of the producers.

That's oversimplifying the origin of both shows quite a bit.
Newsies: A Disney film with a $15 million budget, wide theatrical release, and the usual publicity machine that you come to expect from Disney. The movie was set up to perform well, it just didn't. And there's nothing unusual about a Disney property becoming a Broadway show.
Once: A movie made for $160,000 by a group of friends who, until they were accepted into Sundance, were setting up their own screenings of the film in an attempt to recoup their budget and pay back their investors. The movie only made $9 million in the US and only ever played in 150 theaters. They were nearly stripped of their Oscar nomination. A Broadway show inspired by a low budget Irish film with very little plot is a lot harder to come by.
I don't know what movie you're thinking of but Barbara Broccoli was not a producer on Once.

It shows you how stupid Tony voters are...to choose a depressing piece of repetitive crap over a fabulous show filled with excellent dancing, a full orchestra, a full ensemble cast, music and young talent.
I won't be surprised if they pick a show with screaming kids who can't act or sing, a forgettable score, abusive behavior over the delightful Kinky Boots.

Barbara Broccoli is a producer of the musical Once.

Both shows had well-received out-of-town tryouts, and went on later to receive rave reviews come Broadway. I just think that Once turned out to be the more favoured production.
There didn't seem like any attempt to derail either show from winning though, whereas it feels like a lot more of a competitive edge doing the rounds this year.

We also have the HomeTeam vs. the Brit thing this year. Though ONCE had foreign origin, both shows last year felt very American grown.
Though BOOTS is also based n a foreign flick, the musical is very New York Broadway and MATILDA is very British.
If you don't vote for KINKY you are a turncoat or Benedict Arnold.
(I exaggerate a bit).

I don't think passion was that high and the situation was totally different- Newsies was a big overproduced turd of a kid's show and Once had a middling score and mediocre go-nowhere book.
Hmmm.
Maybe things aren't really that different at all.

Yea, that's exactly the point. Newsies was quite publicly announced as not being bound for Broadway. It's origins as a musical were strictly community minded.
And Barbara Brocoli was a producer on Once the Musical.

I'm really surprised that Avenue Q beat Wicked. I thought it was good. Clever and big on their themes and messages, yes. But not as big and good enough to beat Wicked. In fact, didn't the screens glitched and said WICKED as Avenue Q received the award at the Tonys?

Ha, I bet! There are people to this day that are still wghining about N2N not winning. Plus, those two shows sound amazing!
And Kinky, I REALLY think it's going to be Matilda. Kinky's score is great and fun, but some of the songs sound the same. And I'm actually listening to Matilda (School Song) right now and the music is more original, clever, and poetic. Like how Next 2 Normal won for Best Score over BE, which won Best Musical. The musical there is more beautiful and emotional
