Okay, I totally understand that if you love a show, go ahead and see it as many times as you want. I think it's great. I would never want to stop people from seeing theatre, and it's great for Broadway. However, I have come across people who have seen Book of Mormon, which has been running for only a few months, 10+ times. I've heard of people who have won the lotto half-a-dozen times.
Generally, I'd say, go for it. However, there's something that feels strange to me about seeing a sold-out show that's only been running for a few months when so many people haven't seen it. I wonder what would happen if there were to be a lottery for people who haven't won before, or have yet to see the show. Maybe it would go from 300 people to 150. I don't know. I just think it's strange (I want to say unfair, but I don't want to sound like a child, which I probably already do) that every person I personally know who was at the fan day today had already seen the show, and most of them (I think out of about 10,
won lotto.
Am I just an immature, bratty child, or is there a legitimate point here? (Oh, the responses I'm going to get...)

The people who have won the lotto more than 10+ times you can probably count on one hand. The MormonHeads who have seen the show 10+ times more than likely have paid for the tickets.
What I don't understand is how can the show still be funny to someone the 10th time they've seen it within a 30 day period?

Your curiosity is a valid one. However, the same thing happened with RENT. The same weirdo kids camped out everyday for the rush and kept others from seeing the show. Unfair, yes. Actually the annoying RENT kids are the reason LOTTERY was invented-to make it more fair, so that the loser unemployed kids with no life werent always getting the rush seats.
I say live and let live. If someone has the time to waste and the inclination, I say go for it. I find it a little sad and a little unfair, but who cares, you know.
I agree with Cap, I think the radical fans are paying for tickets. The lottery is REALLY HARD to win consistently with hundreds of names.

The same exact thing started happening with N2N, causing them to start a lottery. The only difference - it was mostly unstable adult women rushing constantly.

Hey, I'M an unstable adult woman, and I never once tried to Rush for N2N. I take offense to that comment!
People need to get lives, but I don't think it's unfair. I'm going to try to get SRO for my 2nd time seeing the show...if I don't win....so be it....I'll see it again next year.

Posted: 7/1/11 at 11:12pmIt's extremely unfair, but I doubt there's anything to be done about it. What sort of pissed me off when I saw it was all the people who were late to the show, who didn't clap/enjoy themselves, and there were a TON of people who would walk in and out of the theater while the show was going on. There was a woman in front of me texting for a bit. I just thought of all the people who would kill to see the show, some of whom have the money for the tickets but can't go till 2012 or those who can't afford the extreme prices. Obviously, everyone has the right to not enjoy the show (one of the cast members said there was a guy in the front row who they could all tell hated it, and they spent the entire show trying to get him to smile. At the end he turned to his wife and just shook his head, so they said they all lost haha) but it is very unfair that they get to see it when others don't.

It's such a slippery slope, and I agree with those who say you can't do anything about it.
I mean, related: how can we (or anybody) judge who should be able to see a show on merit? Say it's 1989 and some guy gets dragged to Les Miz with his wife who bought the tickets when Les Miz won the Tony. And he hates the idea of going, but by the end he's a sobbing mess and goes out and buys the cassette. Going in, you'd say, "Dude, get out. There are tons of other people more worthy than you who actually WANT to see this."
Nothing is really fair. I mean, I live about a 10-minute walk from Book of Mormon and in theory I could lotto every weekend. While I hope every tourist who wants to see it does, I know this isn't realistic -- and at the same time, I don't see what's wrong with taking advantage of locality.

Posted: 7/1/11 at 11:45pmLizzie- I definitely understand where you're coming from. Walking out of the show, one of my first thoughts was "I have to see that again" :) If I didn't live across the country, I would definitely be at lotteries and such.

Back when Jersey Boys was in San Francisco (and I lived in the Bay Area), I rushed it every couple of weeks, including closing night -- which was a big, dramatic, 8-hour-long rush line mess. In that mess was a lady behind us who was local and had had over a year to see the show, but in her procrastination, the only time she ended up able to go was closing night and in the rush line. When she heard that my friends and I had all seen the show multiple times (and like hell we were going to miss closing night), she exclaimed to the box office, "Wait, they've DONE THIS BEFORE?! That's not fair!!!"
Well, lady, you had over a year...
(And my friends and I got the last four rush tickets. Brightest day of my funemployment!)

Posted: 7/2/11 at 1:09amI saw Hairspray around 600 times over it's run. Obsessed? Yes, i am the first to admit that i have a problem LOL. I was one of those people in the lines and entering the drawings BUT i LOVED the show and was into it everytime! I always hate when you are at a Musical and you see people who hardly seem at all intrested in the show: Talking, texting or leaving after the first act of the show. Especially when you are at a HOT show. You want to tell these people "Do You Know how many people would KILL for your seat?". I would like to say YES these people how enter soo many times and have seen the show soo many times is unfair. BUT I was one of those people so i can't LOL

Posted: 7/2/11 at 2:42amNot to play devil's advocate, but the people who are seeing Book of Mormon multiple times are likely not doing it via the lottery. There are definitely some serial rushers at that show, but if you're willing to wait in line for hours for standing room, then more power to you. I can't get mad at someone who's clearly willing to dedicate more time to something than I am.

Posted: 7/2/11 at 2:52amI don't care if people see a show multiple times but personally I could never see a show more then 2 to 3 times and I usually only go a 2nd time if there is a big cast change or if I'm taking someone to a show. I'd much rather go see something else that I haven't seen before instead of a show I've already seen.

One wonders what that person does who has seen a show hundreds of times does when it closes.
The perfect show is one that closes in a week . You only see it 8 times and you are done.
The Spring Awakening girl needs help. I am not saying it in a nasty way.

If the SA girl is who I think she is, she's done this for a few shows. Also, I never once saw her visibly actually enjoy the show -- and I know I saw her MANY times.
And I don't think its for us to judge who deserves to
go -- or whether they have enjoyed it.

These 2 girls stage-dooring NEXT TO NORMAL told me they saw the show over 600 times.
I also heard of this girl who got money from a rich relative after they died and she bought a front row center ticket for SPRING AWAKENING everyday for like 3 months. She wasted all that money on that show when it could of gone to a more suitable charity.
I just DO NOT understand at all how people see shows hundreds of times. I mean that seriously demands some sort of professional mental help. And what boggles my mind is that these fans are proud of how many times they see the show and stalk and tell the actors! I could not think of any other way to embarrass yourself more!
I seriously can not stand these OBSESSIVE broadway fans. These girls who cry when they see Aaron Tveit or say things like "OMG can you believe how much Brian D'arcy James has grown?!" Who the hell are they to say and judge. Makes me sick

Posted: 7/3/11 at 2:44amMy HS was walking distance from Wicked, so after years of losing the lotto I just went after school every day and finally won after about two weeks. I don't think my doing that was unfair, considering how many times I had tried and lost!
