Now that tick, tick...BOOM! has been out since November, I'm curious to hear your opinions about this. If Lin-Manuel Miranda ever directs another movie, and have it be another adaptation of a stage musical, what would you like for it to be?

He now needs a comedy or drama - not another musical. He’s SO associated with the musical genre he needs to show he actually has diversity in other genres. TICK, TICK… BOOM! proved he can direct. Directing another musical is assumed would be next. Time to venture into deeper waters and show you can do more than musicals.

I agree. It's the Lady Gaga thing: there's no way she was going to follow up A STAR IS BORN with another movie where she sings.
Lin's agents have no doubt been fielding offers, if this is something he wants to continue doing. I hope he makes more movies (including more musicals!)

We’ll see. I’m definitely open to seeing any non-musical projects he might have up his sleeve. But I sort of doubt whether he’d want to.
In his 6-7 years of stardom, has he had a single project that wasn’t related to music or musical theatre? (aside from a few stray cameos?) It just seems like that’s where his passions lie, and I doubt he has any interest in distancing himself from that image.
As for whether he’d succeed at directing a non-musical? Maybe. He could probably do a perfectly good job, because he obviously understands the basics. But what made TTB special wasn’t necessarily Miranda‘s technical skill as much as the passion for the theatrical material/subject matter, and his ability to successfully bring musical theatre sensibilities to the medium of film in a way that few modern directors have. So it’s hard to know what kind of vision he’d bring to a non-musical project, but I’d give him the benefit of the doubt if he decides to try.

He’s not gonna want to be “not the musicals guy.” He might not always do them exclusively, but I don’t think his career is going to pivot away: he’s a person, an icon and a brand at once thanks to them. LMM is to musicals what Shyamalan was to magic realism twenty years ago, or even what Spielberg was (is?) to tentpoles.

At the very least, I could see him excelling with a movie that isn't a traditional musical, but is about theatre or music or creative passion –– sort of like the way theatre/music functions in CODA and DRIVE MY CAR and MARRIAGE STORY.
Above all, he should do what he's passionate about. Lord knows he's richer than god and doesn't have to do anything.

I agree with your general point, but His Dark Materials would seem to qualify, since it's not a musical and definitely not a cameo role.

^I stand corrected! You’re right, I would count that. But yes, my overall point stands. I’d be particularly interested to see what, if anything, will be his first writing/directing credit without any musical involvement.

Ok more thinking - Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, directed by Lin Manuel. Bernadette Peters can play George’s mother. Her ‘Beautiful’ would be so chillingly beautiful and poignant. Would also be great to get Mandy involved as the Boatman or something.
