BatBoy was going to be made into a movie. It was supposed to come out in 2009. But the canceled production about a year ago re: What Musicals are Left to Be Made into Movies?

I am not sure if it has been done and I really am not sure who I would cast in it, but I was thinking about 110 in the Shade. If done with the right cast and a big Hollywood budget it could be something interesting to see.

Actually (from the thread title), it seems the other way around abounds more...seems a great majority of musicals on Bway are coming FROM movies =]

I'd still like to see a movie version of Mary Poppins, the musical. It's so different from the movie, yet so good, and in the movies they can do so much more than what they can do in the theater.

As much as I love Wicked, I would rather them not make a movie. My sujestion: if you're going to make it then make it soon before Stephanie J. Block gets too old to play a university student re: What Musicals are Left to Be Made into Movies?

I also agree with the person who said James Marsden as Fiyero!

to the people who are saying that they would rather the wicked book be made into a film rather than the musical...

are you insane? of COURSE they're going to make it a movie musical.

its the show thats broken records and has milllllllions of fans and is a guaranteed box office success (regardless if people like it or not).

the book was successful, but not enough to tip the balance to favour it being made into a movie.

HOWEVER...they will include a lot more elements of the book in the film.

using the book to flesh out the show will be perfect. i bet they will add in some more songs as well like they did to hairspray, dreamgirls, grease etc.

plusssss....i really don't see it coming out for another 5+ years.

there are a few productions closing in america, but there are more opening in europe/asia/australia plus tours.

it depends if they want to get as much as possible from the productions, close them....later release the film and then relaunch

OR they will do a rent/hairspray and release it to boost sales etc.

p.s they're hardly going to put eden/stephanie/whoever into the film. if any, they will chose idina.

I would not be surprised if we saw an article stating that Cry-Baby is being remade as a movie musical. Displeased but not surprised.

Also, I wonder how Curtains would work as a movie musical. They'd have to bring in some of the OBC. Pierce, Monk, and Sabella are all recognizable names outside of Hollywood. Anne Hathaway could be an interesting choice for Nancy except the age difference between her and DHP would seem odd on film.

I would LOVE to See 'KISS OF THE SPIDEROWAN' get a)either revived on Broadway or b) turned into a movie.

I can't seem to cast it... but when 'CHICAGO' came out, I felt Catherine Zeta-Jones had the 'spiderwoman' look. Could Vanessa Williams take a shot at performing Aurora/Spiderwoman again?

Sadly I'm not familiar with the show, RAGTIME but I'm kind of shocked that no one has mentioned that one due to people praising it so much.

"Sadly I'm not familiar with the show, RAGTIME but I'm kind of shocked that no one has mentioned that one due to people praising it so much. "

What is funny is that the movie version of the story stars so many broadway/musical stars that when I watch it I expect them to start singing. Mandy Patinkin, Michael Jeter, James Cagney, Donald O'Conner, Debbie Allen, Elizabeth McGovern, Jeff Daniels(tours singing and playing guitar).

I think "Into the Woods" would be fantastic!

"The Witch: Kristen Chenoweth
The Baker: Steve Carell
The Baker's Wife: Audra McDonald -- actually, love Laura Linney!
Cinderella: Anne Hathaway -- or Kat McPhee?
Jack: Mark Indelicato -- brilliant
Little Red: Ellen Page -- I say get the girl who played Little Inez in Hairspray (give the cast some color!)
Narrator/Mysterious Man: Hugh Laurie -- great!
Cinderella's Prince: Cheyenne Jackson
Rapunzel's Prince: James Marsden
Rapunzel: Jayne Wisener
Jack's Mother: Imelda Staunton -- I think they should get a loud hispanic woman to play off of Mark -- Selma Hayek anyone?
Cinderella's Stepmother: Glenn Close
Florinda: Becki Newton
Lucinda: Blake Lively"

The only reason I'm saying this is because I prefer seeing musicals on stage rather then on screen. But i think that if they were going to make musicals into movies they should do it like they had done Into the Woods just record a performance.

I predict within the next 5 years there will be a Wicked Movie Musical.

Was light in the piazza made from a movie?

i think it provides quite good material for one. :)

agreed also - for the people who said into the woods and RAGTIME! i think they probably can go down well with the movie-watching audiences.

And no doubts Wicked will cash in and make a movie musical but Im thinking not within the next 5 yrs cos they are really popular right now. And nah as much as I want SJB as Elphaba should a movie ever be made, i dont think she or Idina will be cast. For sure, they will find someone as hollywoody as marsden and amy adams.

"Was light in the piazza made from a movie?"

Yes, George Hamilton played the Matthew Morrison role.

Don't forget, everyone. if these were to be made into movies, Queen Latifah would have to somehow be involved, so make some [figurative] room for her, please.

Wicked

Elphaba: Bea Arthur (She would really do wonders with Defying Gravity)
Galinda: Betty White
Nessarose: Rue McLanahan
Morrible: Estelle Getty

I think I might have been watching too many Golden Girls episodes lately but... not sure...

Les Mis (musical - not the last drama that was done)

Melora Hardin, Fantine
Maddie Levy, Young Cosette
Michelle Maika, Cosette
Michael McCormick, Thenardier
J. Mark McVey, Jean Valjean
Lea Michele, Eponine
Brian Stokes Mitchell, Javert
Rosie O'Donnell, Madame Thenardier
Sage Ryan, Gavroche
John Lloyd Young, Marius
Aaron Lazar - Enjolras

Yes, I know this is (mostly) the Hollywood Bowl cast - but, would love to see them keep the whole crew (as long as they are in Hollywood) and make a movie of this! J. Mark McVey and Brian Stokes Mitchell alone would make it a hit!

OK, OK - others are dreaming - so, endulge me! re: What Musicals are Left to Be Made into Movies?

why would they make Legally Blonde into a movie when

1. it came from a movie
2. it was telecasted on MTV
3. it's not a cash cow like Wicked is

I read an article on Cinematical the other day where the author was throwing a fit that "Jersey Boys" hadn't yet been made into a movie. I wanted to tell the guy to calm down, sometimes it takes years! I'm not sure he realized that.

After reading earlier in the thread, I am so glad that I am not the only one who thinks the producers need to leave Wicked ALONE!

Here are my casting ideas for a movie version of Jekyll and Hyde since there is supposedly a movie in the works anyway:

Jekyll/Hyde: David Cook- don't flame me, I realize this is an odd choice, but I think it could totally work.
Lucy: Anne Hathaway
Emma (or Lisa, your preference): Amy Adams? :/
Utterson: Gerard Butler- he's no tenor, but his lower range is PRETTY...unfortunately I can't find the video, but there was a Dear Frankie interview where he sang for a few seconds and that's when I thought of the Utterson casting.

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

Well, reply to the Wicked movie, in an interview with Frank L. Baum, he stated that originally plans were underway for a BOOK movie, but after the musical did so well he said now they are looking to make the musical a movie in 2013? It was awhile away, give or take a year or two.

I'd like to see a film adaption of Grey Gardens.

(Obviously, I know that it was adapted from a docmentary, but still - it'd be nicely done.)

The Light in the Piazza, too!

I would love for the Jekyll movie to come out, but I don't think that David Cook would be Jekyll. For some reason I have a feeling they'll go for an older actor. Not ancient but like 35ish? And I don't think that Anne Hathaway would do Lucy. I'm not even sure if she could live up to the part. One, she's too family-oriented in my opinion and I can't see her taking up the role of a prostitute/"saucy lounge singer," especially since BotM will more than likely be in it. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and it'll be her "breakout" role. And secondly, I don't know if her voice is too cut out for Lucy with especially the ending verses of A New Life; I could possibly see her doing Emma, but I haven't really heard her sing too much! Suprisingly, I could see and would welcome Amy Adams as Emma though!

I kind of hope they cut the role of John though from the movie...I mean it's not that prominent to begin with, the only responsibilites he really has is to pick up Jekyll's spirits, take him to the Red Rat and give the letter to Lucy, and the song "His Work and Nothing More" could be cut I believe.

And on a side note, I could totally see Frank Wildhorn & co. picking big-name actors and have them possibly lip sync. I know that sounds bizarre, but I feel like he would and cast Emma or Lucy as whoever he is currently engaged/married/in a relationship with, as that appears to be a trend. Don't get me wrong, I love the Wildhorn stuff, but I could see it.

And I'd love for them to film a live stage performance of The Woman in White featuring Anne Hathaway as Laura Fairlie and Maria Friedman and Michael Ball in their featured roles. I'd love for Jill Paice & Angela Christian to reprise their roles too, but I don't see it happening if anything should happen with WiW. Those projections shouldn't go to waste! And even if they did a real movie it'd work so well...it's built much more like a movie than a stage show. Oh well...

RAGTIME

Tateh: Robin Williams
Father: Paul Giamatti
Mother: Laura Linney
Sarah: Anika Noni Rose
Coalhouse Walker: Denzel Washington
Emma Goldman: Meryl Streep
Evelyn Nesbit: Kate Hudson

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

Some a**hole in the audience today at GRIND at the York Theater said that GRIND should be made into a movie. Jim Morgan interrupted him and said "let us first finalize the stage show before a movie is even considered."
