Wasn't there some posters hanging around the city a year or so ago talking about a new "re-inventing" of Cats? I seem to remember a few threads about it a while ago.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

As having seen only the touring show, I wouldn't mind if they brought it back to Broadway, with a twist...I always though (I saw it on TV also), that the original had "something" I could not put my finger on, missing. In the touring, the actors mingled with the audience, which made it that much more engaging. I don't know about the Broadway version.
Andrew Lloyd Webber just called me, because he reads this board, and he told me to relay the reinventation.
it's only 4 cats now... but they've been gone to the Heavyside Layer for 1 year and have come back to the scrap yard for some more dancing and singing!
it's abridged as an 85 minute show (with no intermission) and new songs including "Generation Kitty Box" and "Those Good Old Cat Scratch Days" and then EYEDEENUUHH comes out as a green kitty and sings "Take Me Out"
