Posted: 5/24/07 at 4:30pmWhat I really wish they would do is renovate the marquees. The marquees on West End theaters are so much more interesting and have so much more character, instead of the ugly black and gold boxes on most of the theaters in New York. Fix them up to look more like the marquees on the Walter Kerr, Lyceum, or the Music Box!

Posted: 5/24/07 at 4:40pmMy vote goes to the Belasco, mostly because it has incredible potential. I wish the show could have one big hint, to prompt a renovation. The seats are also dreadfully uncomftable.

Posted: 5/24/07 at 5:35pmI am surprised nobody has mentioned the Longacre yet. It is the theatre most in need of actual renovation. While it would be nice to make other theatres more comfortable, the Longacre literally has large cracks in the walls. That theatre needs a HUGE makeover!

Posted: 5/24/07 at 5:41pmI was surprised at how shabby the Imperial Theatre is looking these days.

I'm not sure about renovation, but as for redecoration, definitely the Nederlander. The whole premise of Rent is that it's in the middle of bustling NYC. However, the Nederlander decor is more of lazy, run-down Midwest. I suppose they want it to look authentic NY, but it seriously looks like fake, wanna-be Arizona. The decor is just so in-your-face.
What do you guys think about theatres decorated for a certain show? I think posters outside and signs are ok, but changing the actual decor of the theatre screams out tacky, tacky and more tacky.

Best conditioned theatres I've been to in NY are the New Amsterdam and the Hilton.

To the person that said The Richard Rogers.
Really? I thought that was part of Disney's whole "deal" is that they kinda fix up each theatre they rent(yes I know the new amsterdam doesn't count). When Beauty moved they cleaned up the Lunt and the last time I walked by the Rogers, the outside looked cleaner and newer than I had seen it in years. Of course I haven't been inside either since Disney moved in, so maybe they just trap you from the outside (kinda like how they re did the alley when Lion King moved). Anyone know?

Posted: 5/24/07 at 7:17pmI think the Nederlander, the Neil Simon, and the Longacre need it. My favorites would prob. be the Eugene O'Neill or Walter Kerr.

Posted: 5/24/07 at 10:18pmAm I the only one who LOVES Studio 54? I would hate to see a play there from the back but saw Apple Tree from rear mezz and was fine and I don't think I can remember any leg room issue
#40re: Which Broadway Theaters are most in need of Renovation?
Posted: 5/24/07 at 10:33pmI agree gustof777. I've sat in the front AND rear mezz at Studio 54 for 110 and loved it from both places. I'm 5 ft. 7 and had no leg room issues. In either location.

Posted: 5/24/07 at 10:50pmI think every theatre needs some sort of added construction that makes it so cellular phones and electronic devices lose all signal upon entering the theatre.

one of the nicest theaters in my opinion is the august wilson, its a funky design but its very well kept.
though the last time i saw JB i was really disappointed that they were selling merchandise in the ailes, i mean it felt that i was at shea stadium not a theater

Posted: 5/25/07 at 10:15amI have been in a ton of these theatres and as soon as I saw this only one theatre comes to mind: THE NEDERLANDER. It is literally falling apart inside and needs some major work. I guess that's what happens after 10 years on Broadway though. But - I haven't been in there since the 10 Year Reunion Showing - has it changed?

Redo the Gershwin, the Minskoff and the Marquis so they look like real theatres and not a high school auditorium in an upscale school district.
Sell off the Hilton as a parking garage because that is what would do it best. Its about as cozy as a stadium.
The poor Nederlander's condition cannot be blamed solely on 10 years of Rent. It was in crappy shape when Rent went in there. It hadn't had but perfunctory maintenance since Lena Horne closed in about 1982. The Nederlander and Cort are about the least desirable small-to-mid size houses from a producer's viewpoint.

Posted: 5/25/07 at 7:38pmi like the feel of the nederlander but it definitely needs some cleaning up (removing graffiti for one) I mean you don't go to the August Wilson and see "OMgZ John Lloyd YunG iz so Hawt" written all over the walls.

I thought that the Nederlander looked like a dump inside and out. The Broadhurst is nice but there is absolutely no room if you're over 5'6".
The nicest I would say is the Palace and the Gershwin(plenty of room to stretch out in your seat). The only thing I would do with the Gershwin is put waaaaaaaaaay more bathrooms in. I mean come on there's only 6 or 8 stalls in 2 bathrooms on the Mezz alone and 12 stalls in 2 bathrooms in the Orch for the women. No clue about the guys but there's always a line there also.
For a theatre that's holds the most amount of people(and is sold out every show) that's CRAZY.

Posted: 6/26/08 at 3:45pmI felt that the St James had no leg room (an I'm short!) but the seats were very comfortable. And the ghost is taking over.
