I never meant that he should win simply because he's never won before. - and you don't need to call me stupid. (Personally I think he should have won for "Wicked" - I know some of you will disagree.) And, though I know this is a mute point as they were never on Broadway, but I think if he'd had the chance to be nominated for either "Children of Eden" or "Baker's Wife" he might have taken home the tony.

If Baker's Wife ever went to Broadway, I assume it would be considered a classic & therefore a revival... but could it be eligible for best score?
I'm not sure...I would assume so since it was never produced on Broadway. But that would be an interesting call on the part of the nominating comittee.

I don't know about robbed, but how about the year when best actor in a musical had B. Stokes, D. Sills and A. Cummings in the same category. All completely different shows. All incredible performances. All award worthy.

While I can't say he was robbed (he was up against "Doubt") I still think Martin McDonaugh should have won for "Pillowman"
Elphie: I never called you stupid. I called the notion of awards for one's history stupid.
:) Thanx

"Oh I also forgot to mention the fact that I was mad Aida wasn't even nominated for Best Musical! And the fact that Sherie Rene Scott wasn't nom. for Best Supporting Actress in Aida( even she said she felt kinda shocked about not getting a nom.)"
I couldn't agree more.
The Full Monty not winning any Tony Award. At all. Is a joke. Should've gotten Best score, book, choreography, sup. actress, sup. actor (Andre de Shields-though i loved Gary Beach, Andre de Shields STOPPED THE SHOW), and musical. I don't get The Producers love and don't see why it was considered so wonderful when it first opened. It's pretty sad that that musical has the most Tony wins of all time, and Gypsy won none when it opened.
PURLIE losing Best Musical to APPLAUSE, possibly the worst show to ever win a Best Musical Tony.
Elphie3: the word is MOOT
moot1 [moot]
–adjective
1. open to discussion or debate; debatable; doubtful: a moot point.
2. of little or no practical value or meaning; purely academic.
3. Chiefly Law. not actual; theoretical; hypothetical.
A MOOT point.
A mute point would be a silent one. And what's the point of a point being silent?

Marla Shaffel (Jane Eyre) losing to Christine Ebersole (42nd Street)
Having listened to both scores, I really think Sondheim's new work for "The Frogs" deserved to be nominated over "Spamalot"
You never gain wieght/your never out of date/You never get bald or old/You never have to fret about fate/Its all too late/I mean your dead/Yes Your Dead!
His name is Lancelot/He likes to dance-a-lot
?????
Jerry Herman not getting nominated for "Mack and Mabel"'s score.
"Jane Eyre" and "The Full Monty" (Haven't seen A Class Act) getting steamrolled by the almighty "The Producers". Especially for Score, Jane Eyre's score is achingly beautiful, The Producers is just silly.
Many Best Musical decisions.
Also Sondheim's score for A FUNNY THING HAPPEND ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM wasn't nominated...and the show won Best Musical!
WICKED losing to AVENUE Q.
Respect my opinion.
Also-
THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA losing to SPAMALOT.
KELLI O'HARA losing to SARA RAMIREZ.
HARVEY FIERSTEIN in HAIRSPRAY over ANTONIO BANDERAS in NINE (revival) and BRIAN STOKES MITCHELL in MAN OF LA MANCHA.
LAURA BENANTI in INTO THE WOODS (revival) losing to HARRIET HARRIS.
YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN (revival) losing to ANNIE GET YOUR GUN (revival.
****************************************************************
I am most bitter about Laura Benanti's loss. She gave one of the most perfect performances I have ever seen.
i skipped over the middle pages, so dont crucify me if someone already said it, but Miss Saigon losing to Will Rogers made me mad
I thought all of the JB deserved nominations but don't kill me, my favorite performance was by Daniel. He should have at least been nominated and he should have won! Daniel's performance was perfection!
As much as I love JLY and Christian, I totally agree.

munkustrap - I know, but those are just my opinions. I thought that The Frogs was actually fantastic, but I can see why a lot of people didn't like The Odd Couple. Some of the jokes fell flat, Matthew Broderick was DREADFUL, and IMO so was Brad Garret.
And come on, you can't honestly tell me, that Mary Martin's performance as MARIA was better than THE Ethel Merman in GYPSY!
Jersey Boys winning over The Drowsy Chaperone. i just saw jersey boys and i really don't get what the big deal was about it.
^^^you know I thought the same thing about Drowsy after I saw it. I didn't see what the big deal with it was.
As Ethel Merman herself once said about her Mama Rose losing to Maria: "How can you buck a nun?!" There were also complaints at the time that Ethel "phoned in" some of her performances. Valid or not, I cannot say.
Bernadette Peters not winning for Mama Rose in Gypsy
and Wicked not winning for best musical

Marla Schaffel, "Jane Eyre" to Christine Ebersole, "42nd Street"
and that brings us to "Jane Eyre" losing to "The Producers"- I could go on for hours on that one, but as much as I love "Jane", the show simply hung around for 10 YEARS looking for the right theatre and time; went up against "Ragtime" in Toronto and then to lose to "Producers" just makes my skin crawl.
"Wicked" to "Avenue Q"- just thought the concocted rumor mill on this one was a dirty way to play the game!
Fierstein over Stokes- what WERE they thinking?
No wonder we do this thread every 3 days, there are just so many that keep coming to mind!
CastAlbumFan: I was just talking to an older friend of mine who did see Merman in GYPSY - twice. The first time was relatively early in the run and he said she was mesmerizing, and completely "on." The second time was mid-run, and he said she was frozen solid, lifeless and "phoning it in." He was quite shocked, and he could never watch her perform again after that without thinking about that second performance he'd seen. By contrast, the three times he saw Martin in THE SOUND OF MUSIC, she was bubbly, alive and quite mischievous, not at all as sweet or gooey as any other subsequent Maria he's ever seen.
Unfortunately, I've never seen either of them live; I wish I had. Even a "frozen" Merman would have been something to see, I'm sure.
agreed.. piazza should have won for best musical instead of spamalot. spamalot was the weakest. i don't understand.
and pajama over sweeney? oy vey. and we all thought that was a shoe-in too. the tony's are messed up sometimes.
and did piazza win for sets that year? if it didn't it should have, seriously.
i hope my favorites win this year at the tony's.
Yes, Piazza won sets. It won all three of the technical awards.
