About Tonya Pinkins.

You know they couldn't give all 4 female acting Tonys in one season to BLACK women. LOL.

It's a joke folks, It's a joke.

I am amazed how many people are outraged about performances they never even saw, save for a Tony telecast performance, or less!

I can honestly say that Sunday deserved to win musical in 1984 and Patti deserved the tony last year...but not in 1988, however wonderful she was, Gleason deserved that award.

"It's not like LaChanze plays the tuba, and I bet Manoel Felciano wouldn't have attempted a dialogue with an unborn baby."

I agree with the LaChanze comment, Patti should've won the Tony, but I disagree with Manoel. Christian earned the Tony that he won through his amazing performance as Tommy Devito. Don't get me wrong, both Manoel and Christian were amazing in their respective roles.

Sweeney should've gotten the Tony for revival, but it didn't cause most of the Tony voting committee or whoever who wins were probably more for giving the award to something more upbeat and happy, not dark.

There is no way The Producers deserved half of the Tony Awards it received. And Will Roger's Follies over The Secret Garden, no way!

"No nomination for Ann Harada in Avenue Q"

Yeah.

"Have you heard Patti in Anything Goes? FanF*CKingtastic. She does a delicious job reinventing a role so attached to Merman. Her singing is delicious and she is this perfect blend of sexy and sassy."

Language, ahmelie.

"Just my opinion. I think Into the Woods should have gotten Best Musical over Phantom and had they both opened 15 years later, it would have happened."

Well, same thing could be said for Chaperone. If a show wins score and book, that is often a best msucal guarrantee.

"Last year, I really wanted "The Color Purple" or "Drowsy Chaperone" to win. "Chaperone" was just too much fun and "..Purple" just felt like a nice old fashioned musical to me. It made me think about "Purlie". I did not see "Jersey Boys" and may never see it. I grew up on Frankie Valli's music and I don't really care for "jukebox" musicals (Some argue that it really isn't one). I also think Bob Martin was robbed."

Amen about Martin and Color Purple.

"Will Roger's Follies" over "Miss Siagon" AND "Once on this Island" AND "The Secret Garden"."

It's Saigon. I think anything over Follies, even Island, should have won.

"2. John Tags- Avenue Q"

Did you see Hugh in Boy From Oz? He was amazing and portrayed Peter as Peter, not some guy acting as Peter. But I sill love John.

"There is no way The Producers deserved half of the Tony Awards it received."

Amen, but there was barely any competition that year. Jane Eyere? Full Monty? A Class Act?

Also, I think Seussical was robbed of nomination for sets, costumes, score ,Michelle Pawk, and Janine LaManna. How was Kevin nominated? And HOW did the Producers win Best Score?

Even the most die-hard Producer fans usually will admit that the Best Score and Best Featured Actress Tonys belonged to Monty.

doodle, I can't believe so many people are outraged about an award that hasn't been strictly about performance/quality since it itself can remember.

I haven't seen A Class Act (but only heard good things about it), but I have seen Jane Eyre and The Full Monty (off-Broadway), and I can attest that those are two excellent pieces of Musical Theatre if there ever were two.

Patti LuPone not winning for Sweeney Todd

Ethel Merman not winning for GYPSY.

Kathleen Freeman not winning for The Full Monty (She was absolutely amazing)

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA beating INTO THE WOODS for Best Musical

Harvey Fierstein not even getting nominated for FIDDLER due to the cancelation (sp?) of the Best Replacement Tony.

Jim Dale losing for THE THREEPEENY OPERA revival.

The Odd Couple revival not getting a single Tony nod. No, it wasn't fantastic, but Nathan Lane and Rob Bartlett gave amazing performances.

THE FROGS not getting a single Tony nod. I think the score at least should've been nominated, not to mention the book.

Even though I think THE PRODUCERS deserved every Tony it got, it tended to make people overlook the brilliant piece of work that is A CLASS ACT. Not to mention THE FULL MONTY.

many others. I could go on like the energizer bunny. lol.

Politics and Critics are the culprits for lots of the robberies on this thread.

Examples of politics:

The Into the Woods revival won because Dodgers announced a touring production the week the nominations went out. It never happened. Surprise.

Sort of the same thing with Avenue Q, but with a Vegas twist.

Examples of Critics:

Both Times critics panned Follies. Clive Barnes in the Daily and Walter Kerr in the Sunday section. I was looking through some NYT archives during the Follies opening weeks, and Jerry Orbach wrote an impassioned letter to the editor pretty much saying that Follies was the future of the Musical, and that the critics got it wrong. It was a pretty brave thing for a working actor to go on record against the two most powerful critics of the time.

But Two Gentleman of Verona was hip, of the moment and got great reviews. It's amazing how many mixed reviews Follies got.

Pacific Overtures also got lots of negative reviews, and many said the score was weak.

And then the SWEEP shows like A Chorus Line and The Producers were anointed by the press before they even opened.

The strangest thing about the critics is the number of times they've reversed their opinions from negative to positive after they've killed a show.

Usually it's years later, when someone like John Simon will write some crap about shows he originally panned with lame "well over the years I've come to the conclusion that I was originally too harsh on this now classic work." These folks never seem to comment on the literal cost of their incorrect original assessments.

But the most appalling example was Clive Barnes, who after trashing Pacific Overtures, and costing it both an audience and awards, re-reviewed it in the early summer as it was limping toward its close. In a complete about face he wrote a lengthy piece about how brilliant it was. If that had been his opening night review they’d have squeezed at least a year of a run.

Hal Prince even took out full page Ads in the Times with the reprint of the revised reviews, but it was too late.

NLS, your choices are odd.

1. You didn't see Ethel Merman in GYPSY or Mary Martin in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. How on earth could you say that Martin didn't deserve to win if you didn't see either performance?

2. THE ODD COUPLE was so atrocious....THE FROGS was awful, too.

I know some of you will disagree - but Stephen Schwartz. Come on, nominated 6 times, has won just about every other award a songwriter can, and never gotten a Tony. That's got to be some kind of record.

Haha, Sum, I thought the same thing.

Elphie: Schwartz shouldn't win simply because he's lost before. That's horrendously stupid.

Plus, I don't think you can ever say that he was robbed.

His PIPPIN lost to A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. No contest.
His GODSPELL lost to ANNIE. Again, no contest.
His WORKING lost to ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. Same deal.
His lyrics for RAGS lost to LES MISERABLES.
And we all know what WICKED lost to.

If you ask me, he didn't deserve the award one of those years...he'll win eventually, though.
