Just to reiterate what someone said a few pages back, Will Rogers Follies won over THREE superior shows: Secret Garden, Once On This Island, and Miss Saigon. An outrage.
I don't know if it has been said, but when Elaine Stritch won the orchestra cutting her speech short. I thought that was the biggest insult ever.
Also Sutton winning over Louis Pitre. I know Mamma Mia is not the best show but she Pitre was terrific as Donna. I mean I only wish they would have recorded the show with her.
I think Wicked losing to Ave. Q was absolutely ridiculous.
That said, Marla Schaffel has quite a strong fanbase on this website. I, for one, astounded all my theater buddies that year when I correctly predicted Ms. E. would win. I actually felt her performance was incredible. It was energetic and she dominated the stage every time she was on it. Very talented.
Marla Schaffel was very strong, I'll admit it. However, I just was blown away by the energy of Ebersole's performance. (Let's hope Tony #2 is this year and that she's not robbed.) I don't feel Schaffel was robbed, however. It was a tough call and I can see why you are upset by the "upset" that year. But, I think Ms. E. deserved her award and Marla will have her turn someday. A talent like that won't remain unknown.
"A birdcage I plan to hang. I'll get to that someday. A birdcage for a bird who flew away...Around the world."
"Life is a cabaret old chum, only a cabaret old chum, and I love a cabaret!"-RIP Natasha Richardson-I was honored to have witnessed her performance as Sally Bowles.
Definitely think Drowsy should have won over Jersey Boys. Also, I believe Susan Stroman won a choreography award for her work in Crazy for You and I thought Gregory Hines should have won for Jelly's Last Jam. I was disappointed about that award that year. (I've gotten over it though)
Marla Schaffel definitely deserved the Tony over Ebersole that year. Christine Ebersole was very good, mind you, but that performance in JANE EYRE! My GOD!
Going back even further, Penny Fuller (she played the mother in A NEW BRAIN)...well, back in 1968 or so, she was Jill Haworth's cover for Sally Bowles in the original CABARET. When the positions were switched and Penny became Sally and Jill the standby (due to the uniformly negative reviews of Ms. Haworth) Penny was ineligible for the Award, which she could have conceivably won.
Bernadette should have won over Johanna Gleason. (wasn't even nominated.) Wicked over Avenue Q. Into the Woods over Phantom of the Opera.
And you think of all of the things you've seen, and you wish that you could live in between ,and you're back again only different than before...
After the Sky.

Ghostlight... thank you *bows* Good to know someone agrees with me.

"People who like Sondheim enjoy cruelty."-LuvtheEmcee
once again i thought that laura benanti was quite wonderful in into the woods...i don't know if better than harriet harris...but i think that Cinderella may be the most well suited role that she will ever play.
Marla Schaffel, while Jane Eyre was no gem, had a much more difficult role than Christine Ebersole
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Like when Mille won the Tony Even though it really sucked But the bad shows keep on coming While the Urinetowns get fu--- Who can say if Broadway's changed for the better But because they knew us Because they knew us Broadway's been changed for good

ATTENTION FANS: I will be played by James Barbour in the upcoming musical, "BroadwayWorld: The Musical."
Martin McDonagh was robbed of Best Play for THE LIEUTENANT OF INISHMORE when the Tony went to the surrealistically over-rated HISTORY BOYS.
Jane Houdyshell was robbed of a Tony for Best Supporting Actress for her astonishing turn in WELL, when the Tony went to Frances De La Tour for THE HISTORY BOYS, one of the least interesting performances I've ever seen.

Sorry I missed this thread last month, but glad to chime in now. Even though I'm (arguably) the world's biggest Millie fan, and as much I enjoyed watching Ms. Harris, I liked Spencer Kayden's Little Sally even more. And Sutton Foster as Millie was the greatest performance I've ever seen on stage!
So far, what I've been able to come up with...and yes, there will be more!
