Might not be my place to say this, since I haven't seen either actresses in these shows, but, I thought Marla Schaffel should have won the Tony for Jane Eyre, rather than Christine Ebersole in 42nd Street. (I do love me some Christine, don't get me wrong.)
I totally agree with Ragtime. I will never understand how a show can have the best book and score and not be the best musical. Antoher example is Into the Woods, best score, best book, but Phantom is the best musical, puh-lease!
My biggest gripe though, is Sunday in the Park with George losing to La Cage Aux Folles. IMHO, Sunday is such a superior work to La Cage. And Jerry Herman's snotty acceptance speech for score just pushes me over the edge.

I really don't think his acceptance speech was "snotty". Sondheim may have been robbed of a Tony, but I think the whole thing regaurding the speech was a misunderstanding. I won't go into a detailed explanation of why I think that, but the topic is discussed ad nauseum here https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.cfm?thread=898987&boardname=bway .

In their respective years, Christian Borle in Spamalot and Donna Lynne Champlin in Sweeney Todd at least deserved a nomination.
And agreed that Marla Schaffel should have won over Christine Ebersole.
If commericial success is a big thing that voters look for when deciding the "best musical", why didn't Wicked win?
Just my opinion. I think Into the Woods should have gotten Best Musical over Phantom and had they both opened 15 years later, it would have happened. I agree that Tonya Pinkins should have gotten the tony for Caroline but she also got the tony for Jelly's which should have gone to Barbara Walsh for Falsettos. And speaking of Falsettos, there's a lot of robbing there besides Barbara Walsh. I don't think Jonathan Kaplan should have gotten the nomination. I think Chip Zien and Stephen Bogardus should have both been nominated. I actually mentioned this to someone at the flea market and they said, they split the vote. But back then all you had to do was be a kid to get nominated. And Falsettos should have definitely have won over Crazy for You. I liked Crazy for you. But Falsettos was better. I also think Beauty and the Beast should have won over Passions. I love Sondheim as much as the next person. I waited in 10degree weather for 10 hours for a ticket to Putting it Together with Julie Andrews but I HATED Passions. I know there are people who adore it. I respect you. But I will never be one of them. Beauty and the Beast was not a great show but if I had to choose between the two, I would have chosen Beauty. There are more though. Dorothy Loudon as wonderful as she was in Annie was nominated in the wrong category. She should have been featured.

Come on, give me a break.
Pitre over Foster?! I don't LOVE Foster but she was fantastic in Millie.
LuPone over Gleason?! Once again. Please.
Also, I thought Donna Murphy was pretty fantastic in Wonderful Town.

Well I thought Piazza, although very creative and artsy fartsy, was a little over dramatic, all though there were some good performances in there (victoria clark etc) I WANTED SPELLING BEE TO WIN.

I am suprised nobody has mentioned:
"Will Roger's Follies" over "Miss Siagon" AND "Once on this Island" AND "The Secret Garden".
Not one, but three shows heads and tails better then what won.

Much like 2004. It seems the theme that year was "Anything BUT Spamalot!". Politically, I wish DRS had won so it could have run longer.
"Ragtime" not winning was the biggest joke in Tony history-
Also agree about Pinkins and Mendes.... both should have won.

You think that BatB losing to Passion (no s) was a travesty?? Passion is one of the most amazing scores I've EVER heard.
And, sorry, I am a Sweeney fan but the revival did not deserve the best revival award.
Anyway...
- Ramirez winning instead of O'Hara
- Spamalot winning Best Musical
- Ragtime losing to the Lion King
- Parade losing Best Musical (I admit that the book had problems, but come on!)
- Emily Skinner and Alice Ripley not getting Best Actress in a Musical for Side Show

Ragtime and Samuel Barnett.
In, the 2001 Tony Awards, I thought "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" deserved some recognition for Best Scenic Design (designed by Heidi Ettinger).
Kiss of the Spider Woman over The Who's Tommy.
:/
Marin Mazzie for Ragtime and Kiss Me Kate
Brian Stokes Mitchell for Ragtime
Marla Schaffel for Jane Eyre
Ragtime as overall Best Musical
Light in the Piazza - Best Musical
Let's put it this way,Ragtime was robbed of just about everything that year with the exceptions of Audra, the score, and book.
as much as I truly adore Idina, and think she did earn her tony. Tonya SHOULD have won.
Everyone who was nominated for the revival of Sweeney Todd and The Drowsy Chaperone for best new musical .

I love Beauty and deserved more than just that one for costumes. What happened to sets that year? It wasn't even nominated? And what about Gary Beach? Huh?

Well, sometimes, it's about what show is more marketable. Sadly.
Passion not Passions, thats a soap opera.

Because it sucked.
