So many women have played her. Who is your favorite and why?
Bruce Vilanch.
GET READY TO RUMMMMMBLLLLLE!
Idina. I also enjoyed the understudy I saw in 2009 on the national tour. Her acting and vocals were great and her Defying Gravity blew the roof off of the Buell Theater.
I've only seen Jemma Rix..

I've only seen (live) Julia Murney, but she was absolutely phenomenal.
I've only seen Kerry Ellis live, but Glea Michelphaba.
For me, Ana Gasteyer. Thought she acted the best Elphaba. Se was able to act while singing also and used the belt to a minimum.
Moms Mabley. Shecky Green ran her a close second, though.

I've seen Idina Menzel, Eden Espinosa, Ana Gasteyer, and Stephanie Torns. Loved all of them. Glindas I've seen (Megan Hilty, Kate Reinders, Katie Rose Clark)...I liked all of them except for Kate Reinders. Terrible.
Jackie Burns.
Jackie Mason
Willemijn Verkaik.

Well honestly, most Elphaba replacements are just some variation of what Idina Menzel did, acting wise and vocally.
But Julie Murney and Ana Gasteyer were both fantastic. Murney especially blew me away during her Broadway run with Kassebaum in 2007.
Though I've seen numerous actresses tackle the role both on Broadway and on tour, my favorite without question is Anne Hathaway in Baz Luhrmann's 2009 film adaptation. Too bad Sandra Bullock took the Oscar. At least Hathaway got a nomination.
Julia Murney....woman is phenomenal in everything, and she was especially good as Elphie. Such a wonderful interpretation. So detailed.
Can't resist! Elmer Fudd (his Devying Gwavity was one for the books)
Seriously...Julia Murney rocked this role with an added deminsion of feeling and honesty, not to mention nailing the vocals.
Margaret Hamilton.
The one EVERYBODY'S basing it on.
Even though like 2/3 of the people in this thread are making fun, I'm still surprised nobody in the other 1/3 has mentioned Mandy Gonzalez.
The original is still the best, Idina Menzel was by far the greatest Elphaba that I have seen in Wicked no one can beat it.
