I'm with Midtown. It's simply too much trouble and takes too long to get to and from Milburn via train (it also took me well over two hours to get home after Ragtime). Why don't they have a a couple of roundtrip express buses out of Port Authority? I won't be seeing Dolly and looking at next season, I don't expect to return to Papermill anytime soon.

tovah has been a student of shirley callaway's (mother of ann and liz) for years. she certainly isn't my first choice -- a little too like a terrier -- i think of dolly as more of a fabulous standard poodle.
Margo and Midtown, I concur. What a nightmare it was getting back to NYC after an evening performance of Ragtime. I didn't get back to my hotel until close to 2AM. After being disappointed with their production of Ragtime, the hassle to get back into the city was definitely not worth it.

Tovah would be great, as would Andrea Martin...if they cast a little older, I would love to see what Broadway's original Irene Molloy would make of it. Yes, I do mean the amazing Eileen Brennan! She's got comic chops like nobody's business, and in her prime was a lyric soprano.
If we're going younger, I think Christine Ebersole would be great (though she's got a pretty good gig right now) and so would Klea Blackhurst.
Tovah is a wonderful actress. She may not have the most amazing singing voice but she is perfect for a comic leading role like Dolly. She is also an accomplished musician, having been a piano prodigy in her youth. She will definitely make the role her own -probably a much feistier and less cartoonish portrayal than Channing's. I am sure she'll have a big success with this role.
"It does what a musical is supposed to do; it takes you to another world. And it gives you a little tune to carry in your head. Something to take you away from the dreary horrors of the real world. A little something for when you're feeling blue. You know?"
Rathnait62, I'm giving you MY opinion. I have met Tovah, spent time with her, and have heard her sing unamplified.

Rathnait62, you obviously don't understand my point.
Many people, including MYSELF, would spend a lot of money to hear Elaine Stritch sing. Elaine may not have the most amazing singing voice, but she knows how to deliver and interpret a song. Tovah is a wonderful song interpreter as well as a great actress.
I would see Tovah anytime before seeing someone like Linda Eder who has a beautiful voice but does not know the first thing about interpretation or how to connect with an audience.

Okay..point taken. Please know that I AM a big fan of Tovah's. Her peformance in "Kissing Jessica Stein" is one of my favorite film performances of all time.

I know what you mean, Dottie. When I saw a Ragtime matinee, I was supposed to see Piazza that same night. Thank goodness I still had a car at that time, or I never would have made it.
