jv, I do have to agree with you that Spring Awakening shouldn't have won for choreography.
I just dont like how people assume that shows like Grey Gardens are the greatest pieces of art to ever grace the Broadway stage and then insinuate that anyone who doesn't see those shows (but choose things like Legally Blonde, Lion King, POTO) is a dunce and has no taste. Who says there is one certain type of show you MUST have taste in? Why can't people see that everyone has their own unique taste?
In my opinion, it's not a disgrace that tourists didn't hurry to see Grey Gardens, which partly contributed to the show's closing. Grey Gardens did a horrible marketing job of attracting audiences. Neither of the advertising campaigns worked effectively. Although I thought the first one was absolutely beautiful, it didn't really let you know what the show was about. All it had was its beauty. The second campaign made the show look cheap and campy, two adjectives that I wouldn't say describe Grey Gardens from what I've seen - perhaps someone can back me up on that. You can't expect a tourist to see a show that has little appeal, so cut them some slack in calling tourists "dumb."
I want to make a disclaimer and say that I never got the chance to see Grey Gardens. I am in no way expressing hate for the show, nor can I say I am a true fan of it. As someone who hasn't seen it, I have to say the show didn't appeal to me that much. Only a few songs from the cast recording appealed to me. I've heard mixed reviews about the show. These are a few reasons why I didn't hurry to see the show. I would've loved to see it eventually, but never got a chance.
