Really bored. It's 3:20am.....how crazy is it that Wicked in NY alone has grossed 340 million in 5 years!!!!!
Not really surprising. Isn't there a permanent "This Performance is sold out" plaque nailed to the theatre facade?
holy s---
Isn't the initial cost like 14 million or something? How much does it cost to rent the Gershwin? Sheesh, that's a lot of profit.
Profit = gross - weekly operating costs.
The show has made a lot of money, but you have to factor both weekly operating costs and recoupment of initial investment into that figure. You don't just take the gross minus the initial cost.

CATSNYrevival, I was at one performance this March and the sign wasn't up.
Crazy.
Congrats to the people behind it!

You probably didn't see it (or something may have been blocking it), but their sold out sign is indeed drilled into the wall.

I know it's drilled into the wall. It was NOT there when I went in March. I certainly know where it is. I saw the show 23 times. Just about a month ago the show wasn't sold out either and it was taken down.
Yeah I went to the Actor's Fund performance and it wasn't there either. A couple of seats behind me were empty.
Anyway, that's crazy!!
Is Wicked the most successful show failing to win the Tony for Best Musical?
I can't think of any other off the top of my head (adjusting for price differences/inflation)?
I guess you cant deny that making it into a musical instead of a film (as originally planned) was a good move.
Wicked is just the most successful show even among the ones that have won best musical

Wow, those investors must be thrilled and rich beyond belief, good for them all!
Surely longer runners like Phantom, Cats, Les Mis, etc have beaten it...

I think Cats is the all-time money making champ for now- not that Wicked can't top it in time.

And Stephen Schwartz couldn't [sob] put up $1 million [sob] to get Godspell [sob, sob] to Broadway [Gothampc collapses].
It's definitely the highest-grossing non-best-musical Tony winner...and is on the way to being the highest-grossing show ever on Broadway.

Is anyone else imagining Stephen Schwartz swimming around in a giant pit of money a la Scrooge McDuck?

Actually, I believe The Phantom of the Opera is. At least worldwide, it has grossed over $3 Billion. Not sure how much the Broadway production has made. But it's in its 20th year.
It could make Broadway alliances and recoup for Shrek!
That was total sarcasm!

HA! Doubtful. I'm glad it didn't win best musical. It can finally show people that even succsessful shows aren't the best show to see. Wicked is good, but seeing it more then twice is like a prison sentance. IMHO! I find it very tacky and I am not a big fan.
Whether you like the show or not, Phantom is the single most successful entertainment venture in any format of all time.
Just to put it in perspective, imagine Wicked still selling out in 2025 on Broadway because that's what Phantom has already accomplished.

That would be 2023, by the way.

Try sleeping, next time.
Surely Mamma Mia! has done equal to, if not greater than, than that much business? It also did not win best musical.
