do NOT like the casting in the title role at ALL. Wouldve loved Lauren Kennedy in the role.. Is this actually coming to Broadway sometime soon? I guess I missed that announcement..

No B3ta, there are two planned productions. Tampa (FL) which has been announced since Summer 2007. Gregory Boyd is directing and has agreed to bring the production to his Alley Theatre IMMEDIATELY following the Tampa run on January 9 through February 14.
It has been announced that a concept album is in the works this summer (perhaps they will start recording soon with .. Dacay, since Burkhardt and Kennedy have split responsibilities on the demos). I still can't believe the part is NOT Kennedy's! Talk about a disappointment. Who knows if she'll even work with him again ... hmmm!
A national tour (ehh I suppose they are taking the J&H approach?) or Broadway transfer has been in the talks BUT NOT confirmed.
However, this seems more like Wildhorn wants to bring it to B'Way because of the TWO productions. Not to mention that there will be 3-d Projection designs into the scenic design (which I don't know to WHAT extent though!), and the Marquis may potentially be open / has the specifications (the one man worked as the head of Video for William Dudley for WiW).
"Unless you're a huge Broadway or In the Heights fan, you wouldn't even know who she is. Even then you might not know who she is." ..I had no idea who she was until I read this announcement.
"Regardless, the casting for this is not very exciting. I'd much rather see Bonnie & Clyde succeed than this one. "
...B&C's material is ... rushed. It is almost a last-minute production, not announced until JUNE for a NOVEMBER premiere. I'm assuming this one was ENTIRELY due to the fact that the Re-make movie is ocming out and Frank wants his material out there first, so people didn't think he stole it from the movie. (But look at SP 1.0 vs 2.0 ... 2.0 onward were more based off of the 1982 film (havent seen the OLD OLD one)).
--- " Philly, I hate 9 to 5, so not sure why you mentioned that to me. Wicked has been by far the biggest hit of the century, so that's why that was produced. Legally Blonde, as you said, was good for what it was. No crapola.
Wildhorn shows are campy, drecky, messes. There's a reason not a single one has returned its investment, including the one that ran 4.5 years. "
I swore you were insisting that 9to5 should've been a big hit on one of the grosses things. Perhaps it's because yours and everyone's obsessive Aaron Tveit avatars. ... .
Jekyll & HYDE .. ran just shy of 4 years but thank you for atleast trying to make your point seem better. J&H Has MORE than paid back it's investments and profits are reportedly huge after countless international productions, two wildly successful tours, and there's got to be a reason why its continually produced around the globe at regional theatres...
While I can't deny the campy-ness of things like THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL which were intended to be pure camp ... or the mess of a plot they made DRACULA, the musical to be ... his music is none-the-less continually played around the world.... We'll see how something like Legally Blonde does abroad ....
""everyone's going in expecting a Lauren Kennedy/Brandi Burkhart look alike"
What planet are you on? Most people would go in not knowing who either of them are! "
No no .. you misunderstood me .. I meant people are going into Alice in Wonderland-esque stories EXPECTING a blonde-haired woman .. not a Latina woman. Like if you saw Miss Saigon and you had an African American woman playing Kim .. I guess it could work somehow, but it's not to expected. After WHATEVER he did to Dracula's plot ... he really should learn to stick to material and not take as many liberties! Not that this story is necessarily based off anything, but it's just .. it's got to be messy.
I can't wait to hear the book for this one ... I can ONLY imagine. Perhaps this is why Pheobe Hwang quit/got fired/just left or whatever happened!

I could not agree more I dont understand your obsession philly03 with this guy and his shows, no offence to you as you seem so nice and are one of the sweetest people on here, but his shows are dire
Jekyll and Hyde was a by the numbers pop opera with a dreadful book and a few humable tunes, by the time it landed on Broadway it was even weaker than that.
Dracula was one of the worst shows ive ever seen in NY, i was actually falling asleep during the show, it was badly written with a weak score and again a mess of a book
And the less said about the plotless Civil War the better
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
This will close on the road, undoubtedly. I just listened to the clips, and was literally laughing out loud because they were so horrendous. Absolutely terrible. Through the Looking Glass sounded some cheesy, 80's Michael Bolton love duet. Jesus. That was awful.

- I agree. Philly seems like a sweetheart, and I admire his devotion to Wildhorn. I just have never come across such a big fan.
It will be a miracle if the concept album gets released as it was supposed to be released Summer 2009.
I think a few years from now he will be hawking all his musicals (produced on Broadway or not) on CD on OVC. To the first 1000 callers go the unreleased Dracula concept album
The only good song I have heard from this production was recorded by Brandi Burkhardt, so I don't think Frank wants to feature it on the website. Other than that, those 4 music clips are dreadful.
This could have been a good idea for a show... such a shame. Not one of those songs was even remotely good. The Mad Hatter song made me wish death upon myself.
Maybe this will mellow the critics & let him try The Count Of Monte Cristo and/or Bonnie & Clyde. Than again I doubt anything he does will ever please them.
"There's nothing good on. The media hates Christmas. The media loves vampires, though. Maybe they will show a Twilight Christmas." -Danmeg's 10 year old son.
I never realized that a Latina playing Alice was the same as a Black woman playing the role of Kim which is based around the fact she is an Asian girl who marries a white boy in Saigon... what a terrible comparison (bordering on offensive). Either way, I just feel bad that Dacal (whom I thought was adorable in IN THE HEIGHTS) has landed this crap show, she should have moved to something as good as IN THE HEIGHTS...not a Wildhorn show.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
Sorry ray...did not intend to offend, just trying to think of a quick example. Just, you go in expecting an asian to be Kim/Miss Saigon...not another race? Not that Alice CAN'T be, but I don't see why he should even toy with changing the story as much as he already has/adding on extra details which makes it more complicated. Look at Jekyll & HYDE on Broadway and all the extra details that made that version .. crappy: The whole father scenes for example...
"I still wonder what a producer's logic is to back up another Wildhorn...masochism Tax write-off? "
..well this project is being produced by Wildhorn Productions and the Tampa PAC Organization. This is the start of their hope to become a leading regional theatre with more world-premieres/Broadway try-outs. The are putting up $3 MIL with this one. It's intended to boost ticket sales for themselves in the FLA area, or that seems to be the intention. For DRACULA, the musical the producers were Wildhorn Productions and Dodger .. which are the people which do all the La Jolla shows ... So maybe there aren't as many producers out there as we seem to think!
However, it's been 4-5 years since any new Wildhorn work has been produced stateside, so I guess we will see where exactly his fans stand / how many are left. They may come out in surplus seeing as many DIDN'T see DRACULA...or they may be non-existent besides me .
Thankyou for the compliment on being nice? I try. But really - this guy has written some incredible melodies that I think even his biggest detractors (most of this board) can't argue with. I can't think of too many people who don't like atleast one Wildhorn tune, whether that be "Someone Like You," "This is the Moment," "Gold," "You Are My Home," "Tell My Father," "Loving You Keeps Me Alive," his Victor/Victoria works, ... .. "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" (LOL!). Can't honestly say that about too many composers.
While the lyrics for "Mad Hatter" and "Caterpillar" are .. different/pretty weird, I think many could atleast say the tunes aren't bad. The clips on the website are pretty horrible quality, so please keep that in mind. (And although I like "Finding Wonderland," I hope it doesn't sound like that for real! I like "Through the Looking Glass" though!)
Two of the best songs are Alice solos: "Once More I Can See" (you can hear on Jack Murphy's website) and "Anything Can Happen" seem to be frequently left out - but are beautiful. "Anything Can Happen" is a Linda song too!
I think it's about time people stopped giving FRANK such a hard time for the written material - he generally does an outline / title thing, and the lyricist are supposed to write the lyrics. With the exception of ONE lyricist (Nan Knighton (Pimpernel, Camille) is a poet!), I think we can all agree they all write totally bland, untouched lyrics which foul on most of his melodies (Black, Hampton, MURPHY, Boyd (- a director by trade), and even Leslie has some bland-os in J&H). Perhaps he needs to find himself a very suitable book & lyrics person as opposed to going for a name .. or a friend.
