Posted: 12/14/06 at 8:23pmI am curious how this will turn out. As for me, the only thing that I liked in Xanadu was Olivia Newton John and her songs. She looked and sounded great. But as for the story, I am more than a little concerned about its potential success on B-Way. Although I probably will attend a performance of Xanadu when it comes out, I think that I would much rather see Olivia in concert. I hope I am wrong, and that Xanadu turns out to be a winner. We shall see.

Will the new songs be written by John Farrar and Jeff Lynne?
I dunno, this could be ok, and the reason I say that is; Beane said on The Little Dog Laughed Opening Night Video on BroadwayWorld, about Xanadu,
"I'm doing Xanadu, this year. Repulsive!, but i'll make it fabulous, trust me.
So I think he knows how terrible this whole thing is/can be, and that may be the saving grace of the show.

I don't see how this can work either.
The people who might really want to see this would be going into the theatre for too many different reasons...
...and none of them clear. Camp? Spectacle? Fantasy? Legit theatre? Family show? Circus? Nostalgia?
I predict they'll end up with a multi-million-dollar identity crisis on the stage. ...if they even get that far with it.

Posted: 12/14/06 at 8:43pmJulian, I remember that quote. You are correct. Well, this sure will be a tremendous undertaking then. It will be like demolish and rebuild. I suppose there is room for a new "vision" of this project. I agree with you that the songs could be OK if they are by Farrar and Lynne, but I still think Olivia Newton John is what gave this movie its ONLY appeal. Of course this is my opinion.

best12bars,
sounds like you hit on a new subject for a thread.
"what is your reason for wanting to see Xanadu?"
But I will definately NOT be the one to start such a thread. LOL !!!
By the way, I totally agree with your post, and my reason would be nostalgia. Maybe I should just watch the movie on DVD then. At least I could just skip to the songs I like.

The only way I can see this opening on Broadway (hadn't they announced it for an off-Broadway run?) and in May is if they got Jane Krakowski to open the show after 30 Rock finishes this season (did the show get picked up for a full season?). It just baffles me that they'd open the show without a bankable star above the title.
Oh, how I would love to see Tommy Tune live on stage. It'd be quite cute to see him acting next to Krakowski (and possibly directing/choreographing her) considering their history.
Do we know if this show will open before the Tony deadline? That would make the Best Actress in a Musical competion even more interesting.

*Shudder* I knew that someday someone would try to make that thing into a Broadway musical. Why, I don't know.
I'm anxiously awaiting the stage versions of "Can't Stop the Music", "The Apple", "The Pirate Movie", "Sgt, Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band", "Thank God It's Friday", "Grease 2" and "Going Coconuts".

Don't forget "Flashdance". It's only a matter of time...
Whose bloody idea was this? "Xanadu" is too tragic a mess even to qualify as a guilty pleasure. Even if they're parodying it, why bother?

If "Legally Blonde" can be a Broadway musical, so can "Xanadu"! Even the worst song is better than "Omigod You Guys"!
I, too, am waiting anxioulsy for "Can't Stop The Music--The Broadway Musical"!

Posted: 12/15/06 at 10:31amWhen is the closing date for Tony consideration? Aren't they cutting it close? Seems to me they are gambling on a Tony nomination and production on the awards show to sell tickets.

Posted: 12/15/06 at 11:56amI absolutely loved the movie and was pretty addicted to it when I was younger. I was thrilled to hear the news about it opening on Broadway, I've been waiting for that ever since I heard about the reading with Jane Krakwoski. I'll definitely be there, and early to make sure I get the chance to see it before it closes, which it sounds like a lot of people are betting it will. I just hope they get Jane Krakowski as Kira on Broadway, that would make my day!
