For the record, Lion King's vegas production is still playing.
And, I think that what makes the Vegas production of Phantom unique to Vegas is all the bells and whistles that it adds to it that is unique to Vegas. I feel that Vegas is known for their high end spectacle shows. I think that what makes the situation of the Vegas production of Phantom unique is that it takes a Broadway show that is/ was a spectacle of its own by Broadway standards, and just upped the effects for Vegas standards. I think that one of the reasons for its longevity is that it is able to provide a spectacle type show that Vegas is known for, and yet, it's a style of show that takes a break from the Cirque shows that roam the strip.

"I feel the chandelier would be deemed too dangerous on Broadway. Hell, the stage manager won't let the current one even go faster because she still thinks it's too dangerous."
Oh please. The stage manager has absolutely NOTHING to do with the speed of the chandelier. The effect was supervised by the state, which dictated the speed of the descent.
What is more accurate is that the stage manger is superstitious. In that they feel that if they were to change the chandelier to a new one that is sitting in a warehouse in Jersey, then the show will close. They have been using the same one since day one.

Theatrefan, Haha, if I had an address I would do the same thing. Alas, I don't.
My friend's job was to oversea the transfer of the show form London to Broadway. Making sure that all of the technical elements were okay and the parts of the set that were built in London for the Broadway production arrived safely etc.
I believe her title is Associate scenic design. And, she did say that yes, she orchestrated the chandelier to fall at full speed that one time. And, yes, she did get an ear full for it. However, she said that it was very much worth it when all was said and done.

"On another note, Chorus Line is *still* the longest running BROADWAY musical...Phantom, Les Miz and Cats are West End Transfers that don't have half the merit of Chorus Line."
I'm sorry, if we're going to get into semantics like that then A Chorus Line is the second longest running Off-Broadway musical behind The Fantastiks.

If that's the case, then I stand corrected. A friend of mine conducts the show from time to time and I thought he said they posted their closing notice. Thought it was over by now.
Pitpro, we are both accurate in a way. While the Lion king did post it's closing notice, it didn't close yet. It announced in October, I believe, that it is going to close up shop at the end of this year. So we were both right, you in that it was closing, me in that it is closing but has not done so yet.

I vote we lighten the mood with this gem from Frank Rich's review of the original production.
'The icily attractive Ms. Brightman... reveals little competence as an actress. After months of playing "Phantom" in London, she still simulates fear and affection alike by screwing her face into bug-eyed, chipmunk-cheeked poses more appropriate to the Lon Chaney film version.'
