Who has a beautiful voice in your opinion, Plum? I'm just curious what your version of beauty is.
My Best Friend (not at all into musical theater) really doesn't like Audra's voice. She says it's annoying.

Plum: lol you don't like Shirley Jones' voice either? Why does it make you want to break things. Granted, I think he acting sucked in that movie, but I thought her voice was gorgeous. Do you like any soprano-sopranos (meaning not pretty much belting and then just switching for a particular high note)? Not being sarcastic, just curious.
I don't really think of the OBC Laurie as a soprano...I mean she can sing the higher notes, but I think she's more of a alto-y maybe mezzo, she doesn't seem that comfortable high, and she sort of swoops on the notes.
OOoh, and other voices I'm annoyed by: Mary Martin.

I can hear the angry typing of hate mail now BUT-
Adam Pascal's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. And I listened to his latest cd at a Virgin listening station and just laughed and laughed.
Also, I find Anthony Rapp completely unremarkable in pretty much every artisic way, and his voice makes me cringe.

Ok, I know she's an institution but I can only take small doses of Carol Channing...very small doses...taken with a lot of tequila.
Oh, and Ann Rieking on the Chicago cd...is she channeling Gwen Verdon. A friend and I have a good parts version of Chicago that we play that is almost Ann free.
And also that little girl on the Will Rogers Follies cd. "I'm Mary Rogers" It's gonna take another margarita to get her voice outta my head now.

Celia Keenan-Bolger - ewwwwww.
Marissa Jaret Winouker - ruined Hairspray for me.
Ethel Merman - can't stand her.
Bernadette Peters
Michael Crawford - Who in the heck told someone he can sing?
Laura Benanti - AT TIMES. Her vibrato can be a bit annoying.

I love Christine Andreas! You know that for The Scarlet Pimpernel she was "forced" to sing with a "French accent," correct? Except for like the beginning of Storybook on the OBC. Rachel York did the same, and Carolee Carmello & Amy Bodnar...tried the French accent from what I can remember. But who cares all of the actresses who played Marguerite I always thought were amazing!
For me, Daphne Rubin-Vega -- !!!!!!!!:?!
Steve Blanchard kind of always irritated me too.
EDIT: JULIA MURNEY too!

You do not want to get rid of vibrato! Vibrato is good and healthy.
Anyway:
Christine Andreas
Raul Esparza
Sarah Brightman
Idina Menzel
Mandy Patinkin

Posted: 6/29/08 at 11:22pmI can't stand Daphne Rubin Vega's voice, especially on the Rent cd. Harvey Fierstein usually annoys me. I hated his voice in Fiddler, but I actually like it for Hairspray. I think it works better with that role. Matthew Broderick's voice can also be pretty annoying at times.

I will go with Julia Murney. I saw her as Elphaba and it wasn't really irritating, but it annoyed me when she started belting higher notes. It sounded as if the tone of her voice got lower and she sung higher...if that makes sense.
As for Daphne, I will kinda disagree. I think her voice works with Mimi. Otherwise, ew ew ew.
