2 words for you, Moulin. Rouge. Sorry if that's a repeat, I haven't read the whole thread yet but just think about... the set, costumes, choreography, it could be beyond incredible!!

I'd love to see You've Got Mail as a musical.

Jake - there is a musical out there called "She Loves Me" which is rediculously similar to You've Got Mail (in my eyes at least). however i do think a modern day, You've Got Mail, adaption is necessary and would work quite well. imagine a series of duets of their emails to each other. beautiful.
Ahh, so many people are saying Mean Girls, which I orginally thought but didnt want to suggest for fear of being shunned. haha.
I would also love love love to see Camp, Suburbia maybe and definitely would love to see a really great, well thought out musical of Return To Me (where the girl gets a heart from an organ donor and winds up falling in love with the donors husband.. whos in that? i forget).
"I think it's been mentioned before, but "Cruel Intentions" would make for a good, little Off-Broadway show."
Wasn't Cruel Intentions based on Dangerous Liasons? If so, then there is already a musical version called "The Game".
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Singing in the Rain was ever on stage...
I'd love to see that.
I love, love, love the idea of Big Fat Greek Wedding!
That would work, I think.
Also-how about Bullets Over Broadway, which was rumored forever and dropped off the radar. (they had Woody Allen and someone else writing the book and someone doing the music.) I think it would work.

"You've Got Mail" was an update of the same basic source materials as "She Loves Me" -- the original play was "Parfumerie." It was also the source material for the Judy Garland film musical "In the Good Old Summertime."
"Singin' in the Rain" has been seen on Broadway, in a flop production directed by Twlya Tharp.
Singin' in the Rain on stage a million times. There is a cast album on Jay Records. Its even been on Broadway at the Gershwin under the direction/choreography of no one less than Twyla Tharp (I assume there were a lot of jumping/spinning turns).

hmm camp definitely could work.
They are actually, i believe, in the process of taking mean girls to broadway so there ya go. (although i dont love the idea of this, i was so anti Legally Blonde but now it's one of my favorites so i'm trying to keep an open mind.)
I think enchanted would be awful and would not work at all. As people said so much of the beauty of the movie comes from the animation --> real life aspect.
You know, Guffman is always thrown out there in these threads, but I feel that pretty much everything that made the movie work so well (cast, documentary-style direction, freshness of improvisation, etc.) would be exactly why it would never work on stage. Much of what makes it so funny is what can't really be achieved in a scripted stage production performed by another cast. It would come across more like bunch of fans reenacting the scenes impersonating the original performances, which you can see in any college theatre department or community theatre green room. I love the film dearly, but I would never want to watch it reenacted on stage.
Regarding Singin' in the Rain, don't forget the London production...
1984 London Cast
I was just watching Clueless on TBS and thought that it might make a fun musical. I think the wardrobe for that movie is inspiration enough
I've actually written a few songs for a "Waiting for Guffman" musical. But, then again, I've also done some "Napoleon Dynamite" songs...
For years now, I've been piecing together a musical adaptation of BIG FISH. More on that as it comes!
i'm excited for the musical of Finding Neverland that they are working on.
my picks:
Imitation of Life
Rope
Life is Beautiful
American Beauty
there was a musical, written in the 90's, that is extremely similar to CAMP. the musical is based on Stagedoor/any ridiculous theatre summer camp.. which is what CAMP is based on.
the music wasn't as good. but then again, only two of CAMP's current songs are original pieces. so they'd have to go in an entirely different direction with the score.
who would be good writers for a CAMP musical? Miller and Tysen?
I thought of another one. Jurassic Park LMAO!!!!!! That would be brilliant with the dinosaurs. I wonder how they could make special effects of people getting eaten or tortured.
Actually, scratch that idea. It would be funnier if there were actors dressed as dinosaurs, and the dinosaurs sang too.

I LOVE That Thing You Do.
It would actually work very well, I believe.
it should be made into a musical yesterday! I mean Tom Hanks has to have enough money to pull something together. If not maybe he could get Oprah to help him...

Fiercey516...I guess whoever did the music for "Count" in LA was not really in tune with how it would come across to an audience. What a shame, because I think if someone came up with some great music for it (and of couse, a great script), it would go over very well. The trouble with plays from very famous books(books that have been taken to the big screen as well), is that people need a totally new artistic approach (such as Jill Santoriello for "Tale"...her music is brilliant), or else it will not catcdh an audience's fancy.
BobbyBubby...thanks for the links, I didn't know of them. Did you get to see it?
There was also a play called "The Shop Around the Corner" which was later made into a movie starring Jimmy Stewart that had the same plot as "She Loves Me", "In The Good Old Summertime", and "You've Got Mail".
How about "The Pirate Movie: The Musical!"
You've got mail could be awesome
Moulin Rouge would be fun, but Down With Love is my first choice.
