geeh i just wanted to express how much i love music and how much i hate theory class. its just stuff ive known forever so its extremely boring and i cant switch out.
today was funny though
my voice teacher pretty much said we had to pretend to be southern baptists
we had to get rid of our CT "t" problem and have energy
i was like "i think thats enough pretending for one day"
hehe. yeah so music theory stinks but my voice teacher is my teacher so thats good. just thought id share. yell at me if you must.
I love studying Music Theory.
How basic?
"What does an eighth note look like" basic?

as you go along, it;'ll get harder. Theory is important stuff. I'm sure some people in your class are hearing it for the first time. Read ahead and start working on more compllex things...it'll help when you come to it.

Just wait till you get into Theory four! You'll be dying to go back to the "what does a quarter note look like" days!
Music Theory in my school is the asme way. We clap to quarter notes.
ok the funny thing is my voice teacher isnt from CT and i am... i see her as having an accent and i never thought that I was in fact the one with one. i mean i just figured out that i NEVER pronounce t's or d's. and i mean ive been taking voice for 4 years and never noticed.
The Music Theory class at my school was a joke.
I just study it on my own.
A fantastic book on theory is "Sondheim on Music"
well im a junior now and im in theory 2 but thats only because of my grade. i hadnt taken it last year or freshman year because i was in an advanced vocal ensemble but this year i had room in my schedule for 2 music courses even if this was the only other one.

Try taking Musicianship (which is pretty much applied theory) without having any foundation in theory.
To make things clear, I am an experienced musician. I can read 3 clefs and know everything I need to play properly. But when, on the second day of class, before we'd done any reading, the teacher started talking about triads as if we should know them offhand, I knew I was in trouble.
And sight-singing, by the way, is pure terror.
I do absolutely nothing in music class (I've played piano for six years), and our teacher is teaching the class about "ta-ta's" and "ti-ti's" (meaning quarter and eight notes). It's the student's fault though; they don't understand anything.

In my school, we have a class called something like "How to Read Music," which is the bare basics of...well...how to read music. To get into the actual theory classes you need to be able to read music and know the names of all the keys.
I actually don't know the names of all the keys, but since I can do any of the piano exercises that get thrown at me I still got in.

wow...by the third week of Theory one we were writing music (only triads) at Oklahoma City University.
Wait till you get to German Augmented 6ths. Thats next semester.
Then...Form and Analysis...Conducting...Acoustics.
Beside the MT BM, we graduate with a minor in theory if ya can't tell. If you're bored, stop by!

see I loved theory class. We were divided into levels in college and I was in the higest level, and it was still easy. I mean it was a class where I didn't have to pay attention at all and still always got an A! Unfortunatly I can't remember anything anymore...
OK...trick time for key signatures...if anyone is interested...disregard if not, or you already know. Sharp keys: I'm assuming you know the order of the sharps. If not...just remember Fat Cats Get Drunk And Eat Birds. OK...go to the last sharp in the key signature~say there are 4 sharps~last sharp is D#~go up 1/2 step to get your key~ E major...(or it's realative minor C#minor. Not sure which?...keep in mind that pieces like to end on the tonic, so one good clue is to check the last measure to see if it ends with the notes of an E major chord or a C#minor chord...not the only thing that determines key...but a good first clue) Flat keys: Order of flats is opposite of sharps BEADGCF. Go to the last flat~say there are 3 flats B,E,A~go back one flat to determaine the key~E flat major~or it's realitive minor C minor. Enough for now...sorry if this is confusing or boring.

I keep meaning to buy the Idiot's Guide to Music Theory--anyone read it?
Sightsinging, like fooseball, is the DEVIL! We're working on modes and secondary function now...fun.
I loooove music theory, it's got to be one of my favorite subjects ever...I took AP in HS and tested out of Theory 1 and 2 at school but took them anyway :)
ahhhh....the days of theory. I love modes and secondary functions for whover mentioned that..oh wait, no I don't.Yeah we were writing pretty early in my theory 1 class-16 bar pieces and then expanding on them. Ahhhhhhh how I don't miss theory.
I have that Idiot's Guide. Haven't read far into it yet, but so far it's pretty straightforward and easy to follow. I also own a book called "Lies My Music Teacher Told Me," which tries to disprove some commonly held misassumptions about music. Again, I haven't read too far into it yet, but it seems to be pretty in-depth on a lot of things.
I've taken one theory class before, last spring. The class covered the basics, from keys to triads and dominant-sevenths. I feel a lot more comfortable with music now after taking that class, so much that I'm taking a piano class right now and planning to take some Composition classes soon. It's all good.
