Would I be the only one who would pay money to see Les Mis with new rock orchestrations? I think it would be great. The reason why I'm thinking of this is because on the london recording, in the first song, when Javert is singing towards the end, there's a little bit of a guitar riff that sounds really good, and I think that I would love to hear the rest of les mis with some blaring guitars and crazy drums (at some points). I was really hoping that "scaling down" the orchestra in the revival meant more guitar, but after I saw it I was disappointed. What do you think? Guitars?
That would be a great idea to really make it rock; I'd totally pay to see it. I've always been a fan of Broadway songs that have some pop/rock thrown in - nothing like a screaming guitar or pounding drums to complement a powerful belter. I remember before I saw Les Mis in the 80s a friend told me it's technically an opera, which kind of scared me off at first, but then the music turned out to be very pop and rock oriented; the styles also reminded me a bit of Miss Saigon, (of course because of the same writers), which wasn't a bad thing at all - who doesn't rock out to "The Heat is on in Saigon"? "Castle on a Cloud" by Marilyn Manson? It would be creepy but would work so well.
"Nobody's Side" and "Hare Krishna" are two of my favorite drumming songs - the double bass riff near the end of Nobody's Side is a wonderful touch (don't get me started on the vocal arrangements - oy vey!).

i might perhaps buy a studio recording or concept album like this. I mean, there are already, what like 37 wildhorn concepts?...i think les mis could use one. yes.
Ok, so I don't have to go and post on the "Unpopular Opinions you hold" thread.
Maybe daphne could actually pull off a rock-ified "I dreamed a dream"
That was a rumor I'd heard well before the revival was ever fully cast -- that it would sound more rock, similar to the French concept album. Guess not!
StephenSondheimWHOO - If not, at least Eden will have a chance to riff it.

Drew already does it...but yes...lol.
Has anyone else heard his "Gesthemane?"
Pure love. Pure pure love.
I agree that it would make a good concept album. It would be interesting to see what could be done with a character like Eponine...I just wouldn't want them to make her part too angry. Master of the House might be a little weird in Rock form. There is a lot that could be done with the idea.

Even though this isn't a JCS thread, yes, his Gethsemane is wonderful.
if you really want to see/hear French people complain to a drippy rock score, why not just buy the french Notre Dame du Paris?
I think in the symphonic recording, there's a few guitar chords here and there in the song Javert's Intervention. (I think thats what the song's called!)
