I believe she is having some health problems. But I am sure could still handle singing, dancing, and acting in a Broadway show. She just can't handle all the dancing demands she handled wonderfully in her younger years.
I think it's great she still helps out cast Chicago. It's also wonderful some performers get to have their own choreography session with her.
Mel scored high with critics when she appeared in Broadway musical Rent last year
Excuse me?
So just because the Weisslers like to stunt cast sometimes, lets just murder them, huh?
The issue, IMO, is not that they *do* stunt cast. It's that they often do it poorly, and it's very clear that their casting decisions are often primarily about bringing in the money, which, while obviously important, it not the only thing in the world, and it's not the only thing to producing theatre. They're powerful, yes, but they abuse their power.
But it's just they don't ALWAYS sunt. The original casts of Chicago, and Wonderful Town weren't stunt casted. Granted stunted replacement actors followed.
And which stunt casted stars in Chicago could we say were truly atrocious besides Melanie Griffith? Everybody complains that they stunt cast too much, but most of the stars give a mediocre, or solid perfomance. Nothing atrocious. Griffith was atrocious, that's been established. Chicago has had some wonderful names perform in the show (Marilu Henner, Sandy Duncan, Brooke Shields, Kevin Richardson, Robin Givens, John O'Hurley, Wayne Brady, Paige Davis, Robert Urich, and many more) Granted some of those stars have a backround in Theatre. I didn't say they always do it. And I'm conceding that sometimes they do it right. And, well, there are the people who are good and can handle it, and there's outright atrocious, but then there's a middle ground of of mediocre and that, IMO, is not stunt-casting done well.

It's probably worth noting too that while the Weisslers do stunt cast for CHICAGO, they have turned down many names who have auditioned for the show including Andrea McArdle, Deborah Gibson, and for many years, Brooke Shields.

If the Weisslers really want to stunt cast the show they should get Liza to come play Morton. I mean besides being able to sing, the role really doesnt require much and Liza isnt really as busy as she used to be. Can you imagine how fast those tickets would sell...

People think they just call up these random stars and say "Hey! Wanna play Roxie on Broaday? Okay you'll start in 2 weeks."
I've been saying Liza would be great as Mama for quite some time. But I think they should save that casting for a special Chicago occasion, like the 10th Anniv. or the final closing cast.
I'm sure everyone and their mother has asked to be in Chicago. And let's face it, it's not stunt casting all the time. I mean, aside from us, who knows who Amra or PJ or even Charlotte are.
And when they do stunt cast, let's consider the fact that they've had relatively few really bad calls in casting. Hell, the one I remember getting relatively mild notices was Paige Davis, and she was already in the show before she became famous! For all the stunt casting, let's face it, they do manage to choose the right people for the role.

Like I said earlier, we can't honestly say a star was terrible in show, besides Griffith. She was really the only one.
I saw Paige Davis twice, and I thought she was fabulous. It's a shame she didn't get to play Sweet Charity, maybe she can replace Ringwald on tour.
What I've realized that each actor brings something different and special to their role in Chicago (star or not.) They are not usually terible. Like look at Luba Mason, she might not have been the best dancer, and yes some choreography was toned down for her. But she made up for it with her amazing vocals and fierce acting. What an incredible voice she has. Luba and Brooke made a GREAT team. Wonderful chemistry.
If you guys want to see a drop dead cast, get tickets for the next couple of months when Charolette and Brenda are there. I cannot wait, they make a spectacular pair!
Also I agree that Liza should be saved for something special.
