"...that was COMPLETELY random in the musical..."
Not when you see the show. It's sung by an Imelda Marcos impersonator. Marcos (and her husband of course) were BIG news in the US in the '80's, particularly in NY, and most of the audience recognizes her on site.
I think it's interesting that they actually use Tagalog and not jibberish intended to sound like a foreign language.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 8:49pmwell I knew all about the scandal with her and how big she was in the 80s... i just didn't realize that the show would capitalize on that... it just seemed so random to me when i was listening to the CD... i was like... "where the heck did that come from???" but it made me laugh

Posted: 6/22/06 at 8:51pmI had NO idea who she was until they said it during the show -- and yes, I was alive then. I'm not so sure she was quite as recognizable as the other much more obvious impersonators.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 10:04pmI didn't recognize her, actually, when I saw the show. I asked the person I was with, "Who was that?" He didn't know either. Oh well, I was born later in the 80s.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 10:06pmImelda was the only impersonator I didn't pick out right from the start. For you guys who do speak Tagalog, what does she say? Is it just that "things ended up the way they should?"

The actor portraying Imelda is the lovely and talented J. Elaine Marcos, who is also a stand-up comedienne, by the way, who was also in Wonderful Town.
She can be seen performing stand-up comedy in town at different venues from time to time. Great lady.

Same last name. I'm not sure, I could ask. But then again, it gives you a reason to go to the stage door...

Posted: 6/22/06 at 10:15pmI'm halfway through the CD but since you mentioned Tagalog, I had to skip to the Finale to check it out. But I don't even know what she's saying... and I'm Filipino! I second the question above. I would really like to know. Salamat.

I looked in the playbill and she does look Filipino. But that doesn't always mean anything. Marcos sounds like it is a common last name, but it is a funny coincidence.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 10:19pmShe is a Filipina.

Posted: 6/22/06 at 10:20pmIf she is related, maybe that's another reason they wrote that specific impersonator into the show...not just because she was important in the 80s. But I dunno.

No, I sincerely doubt it had anything at all to do with Elaine.
Remember, musicals are generally 5-7 years in the writing before they ever get produced.

Oh, that's right. It could've always been a last minute add-in though, no?
So does anyone know if they're related?
