Avenue Q.
Yes, there are a few swear words and the nude-puppet-sex-scene. But please, he's 13. I think he'll cope. It's very witty, clever, funny and has a sweet message. A terrific homage to Jim Henson. I think they'd have a great time.

Posted: 7/14/06 at 3:55pmI don't know if Reckless was being sarcastic or not. I went when I was 14 with my 13 year old cousin and he had already heard all the words used and knew about the things that went on. I think Avenue Q would be greatly enjoyed by both.

Spelling Bee would be a good choice.
I haven't seen Spamalot, but Monty Python should be on target.

I, personally, wouldn't recommend Avenue Q for a 13 year old in general. Now that she says she doesn't want anything too 'racy,' I definitely wouldn't recommend Avenue Q.
Just my opinion.
I do think Spelling Bee would be a good choice.

Sounds like he has already seen some of the usual suspects. How does your husband feel about the theater? Is he an enthusiast or not? I suppose either way I would recommend:
Spamalot
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
The Drowsy Chaperone could be fun for them.
I have not seen Jersey Boys or Tarzan yet, so I am not sure about those. I am not certain Beauty and the Beast would be a great show for a 13-year-old boy and his dad - perhaps a bit too staid for them (but I could be wrong). Steer away from The Lion King - I saw that in a theater filled with kids who were bored and fidgety by the whole thing.

I'm 13 and I understood Sweeney completely when I saw it- and I had not understood it at ALL before that.
But on the other hand, I don't think your son would enjoy it very much (although he would get the gist of the story) unless he's listened to the cast recording before- so it'd probably be a good idea to stay away from Sweeney.

I'm around you son's age, and I've seen Sweeney. I love it, but I've known the show since I was eleven, so I know the story pretty well. He most likely won't like it, and it's not really that gruesome like a horror movie. People get killed, but it isn't done gruesomely.
Spelling Bee would be a great choice.

I'd say Spelling Bee, DRS, or even Avenue Q - I'm 14 and I wouldn't say that he'd have trouble with any of those.
Sweeney depends specifically on your son's maturity level. If he could stay engrossed, I'd say go for it. I have a 17-year-old friend who absolutely loves the show, and a 17-year-old friend who didn't get it at all. If you think he's mature enough, I'd definitely recommend it.

I think that this specific revival of Sweeney would be inappropriate for a 13 year old boy merely because of the level of focus and maturity and stamina it takes to absorb.
I say give it a few years and a few cast recordings to see if he is ready for that kind of performance. I don't even mean gore. I mean appreciation.

Posted: 7/15/06 at 12:40amSpamalot is alot of fun. I just went, and there was a teenage boy with his family, and they really enjoyed it. He was a bit older than thirteen, but I think it more appropriate than Avenue Q.

If I was still a teenage boy going into 8th grade, and my dad were taking me to a show, I'd make him take me to Spring Awakening, Avenue Q or Sweeney Todd. Just for the subject matter -- each would make him cringe, but we'd at least have something not to talk about on the ride home.
If I had a 13 year old son, I'd take him to Monty Python's Spamalot or Jersey Boys, just so we would have something we could talk about on the ride home.

Posted: 7/15/06 at 1:44amIf he's really in to theater he won't like Tarzan, and I would'nt recomend paying for it. I loved Beauty and the Beast when I was 7 but I resaw it last year when I was 14 and really disliked it, but maybe that's just me. Lion King is amazing though IMO. Drowsy is a lot of fun. But Ave Q may be the only thing Dad would thouroughly enjoy but your son would feel uncomfortable watching it with his dad cause I know I would.

Posted: 7/15/06 at 10:09amIt depends if he really appreciates theatre. If nothing else, 25th or the wedding singer will be perfect. I'd go with 25th annual because, well, it's just better.

I would take him to Forbidden Broadway.
My Dad took me to the first Forbidden Broadway when I was a teenager and it started a tradition. My Dad took me twice a year every year for almost 18 years. It stopped a few years ago when he died. He loved Forbidden Broadway more than me and now I continue that tradition for my Dad.
We bonded because of Forbidden Broadway.
If they like it maybe they can make it a yearly tradition.
My Dad would have been very excited that I did a talkback with the writer Gerard Alessandrini. Forbidden Broadway is very special to me.

I am so damn sick of people talking down to young people like this.
