#0show for a 13 yr old boy with Dad
Posted: 7/14/06 at 10:10amI've enjoyed bringing my daughters to NY for special 13 year old birthday trips. Now its my son's turn. And horror of horrors, he has requested that his dad take him vs. ME. (I guess its a guy thing - but I am the New York loving parent in this family!!!) Anyway, I still get to do the planning. So, my son has been raised on show tunes and cast recordings all his life. He's seen various touring shows from time to time (Mamma Mia, Wicked, Cats, Phantom, Riverdance to name a few). In addition to the baseball games planned and the usual touristy stuff, he's requested to see Stomp. I also want to plan another Broadway show for them to see. Any suggestions? I prefer that it be not too racy.

I prefer that it be not too racy.
rac·y ( P ) Pronunciation Key (rs)
adj. rac·i·er, rac·i·est
Having a distinctive and characteristic quality or taste.
Vigorous; lively.
[From race.]
Stick with another baseball game. I don't think you're going to find what you're looking for on Broadway. Maybe on tour, but not on Broadway.
Oh, and I'd stay away from THE COLOR PURPLE if I were you.

Posted: 7/14/06 at 10:17amhmmm - hadn't thought about Sweeney. DRS is one of favorites. I send everyone to see that! Thanks for the suggestions. Just how gruesome is Sweeney?

Does Dad like musicals, too? If not, what about Blue Man Group?

Sweeny will be hard to follow. Speling Bee's a great choice. He can probobly handle DRS. I don't think it's too innapropriate.
Maybe the Producers? I saw that when I was 13.

Sweeny will be hard to follow.
Why do you say that?

"Anyway, I still get to do the planning."
That's sexist. I'd be all, "If I'm not invited, you can plan your own dang trip. And enjoy 'Perfect Crime.'"

Posted: 7/14/06 at 10:59amnah - not really sexist. Its just that I'm a control freak AND I know NY and my husband doesn't. I am an awesome trip planner -if I do say so myself :) - and I really enjoy that part of it. I want my son to have the same kind of fun that my daughters had on their trips and if I dumped it on my husband to plan, they'd be standing in the middle of Times Square scratching their heads. (I am secretly hoping that something comes up at work where I'll have to step in and make the trip instead. shhh -don't tell.)

I'm not sure why you were told to stay away from The Color Purple. It's a great show and it demonstrates the need for tolerance, the power of love and about perseverance despite adversity. There are some "adult" themes (Celie falls in love with Shug, Celie's abuse at the hands of her husband and step-father) but they are handled quite beautifully and it all works out for her in the end. I highly recommend it for anybody over the age of 10.

When I went to see it I had trouble keeping up, but then again maybe this 13 year old boy may be smarter than I am.

Posted: 7/14/06 at 12:15pmSpelling Bee or The Color Purple. Both are good shows. If they do Spelling Bee, tell them to get there early and see if your son can sign up to be onstage. That would be a great experience!

While I love Sweeney Todd, I think most 13-year-old boys would be bored. Same with Color Purple. I agree with everyone who has suggested Spelling Bee.
I'm suprised no one mentioned Jersey Boys.

I'd definitely go for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
I love Sweeney, but it would be hard for some 13-year-olds to handle. In reference to how grusome it is, there are two buckets filled with blood, that's about it.

Posted: 7/14/06 at 3:27pmi think I can DEFINETLY be of servise here becuase I'm around the same age as your son. Well I don't there's really anything on broadway right now that is that inapriopriate (i did close my eyes during You can be as loud....... from avenue Q but besides that it was fine.)you can't go wrong with spelling bee, thats an amazing show. Color Purple would be good. I loved sweeney but i had seen two other productions of it and I knew the story and music really well, i sorta agree that it could be a little hard to follow if you don't know the plot (esspesially act two) but I think it would still be great. I don't know if you think it would be to racy but RENT is great.

Posted: 7/14/06 at 3:34pmSpelling Bee and DRS I advise as the easiest to like for guys with nothing hard to follow and nothing that vulgar to the point of offending a 13 year old. They're funny and I suggest the funny yet, smart shows for those who look for a fun father-son show.
#24re: show for a 13 yr old boy with Dad
Posted: 7/14/06 at 3:36pmIf your son is mature for his age DRS would be a good choice.
